Qantas will shift its operations to Terminal 8 at New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport from 3 April 2018. Terminal 8 at JFK Airport is home to Qantas’ partner American Airlines.

Qantas’ daily service from New York to Los Angeles (with onward connections to Australia) currently departs from Terminal 7 at JFK Airport. This terminal is shared with Qantas’ Oneworld partner British Airways.

Terminal 8 is owned by American Airlines, a key Qantas partner. Qantas’ move to Terminal 8 at JFK Airport will improve connectivity with American Airlines services to other destinations across eastern USA and the Carribean.

The terminal change also means that Qantas passengers will be able to access the new American Airlines Flagship Lounge at JFK’s Terminal 8. This is an improvement over the current British Airways lounge in Terminal 7.

A couple weeks ago the flagship lounge was pretty good. A dozen bottles of bollinger in the ice bucket (replenished as soon as each bottle was finished) and a pretty good selection of food. A bloody mary and tequila bar where you could mix your own drinks how you like them.

Bar QF’s Fcls, the new flagship is superior to all QF lounges either in Australia or overseas. Access to the flagship lounge is also pretty generous including business class.

Qantas Gold & Platinum frequent flyers, Oneworld Sapphire & Emerald members, and Business class passengers can access the American Airlines Flagship Lounge. It is not yet clear whether access will be extended to Qantas Club members, or if they will be relegated to the American Airlines Admirals Club.

Our members are largely pleased with the move to Terminal 8…

I think it’s a great move. I always went to T8 before migrating to T7 merely for the flight.

But not everyone is happy…

I’ll be sad if this happens. As much of a third world dump as terminal 7 is I actually find it’s compact size to be a real plus on the whole with security and when bad weather causes huge log jams with gates at the bigger terminals.
