It’s now possible to redeem Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollars for Qantas flights on selected domestic routes.
Airpoints redemptions are available on the 85 Qantas routes within Australia where Air New Zealand codeshares with Qantas. Award seats are available online in Economy class only, and are not offered on Qantas international flights. Additionally, only point-to-point flights are available as Airpoints reward bookings – Qantas flights involving connections cannot be booked online.
Although the Air New Zealand codeshare agreement generally only covers Qantas flights booked in conjunction with an international Air NZ ticket, you can now redeem Airpoints to book standalone Qantas domestic flights.
How many Airpoints Dollars do Qantas flights cost?
Qantas reward flights are priced according to Air New Zealand’s airline partner reward chart. For New Zealand residents, Qantas flights start at 125 Airpoints Dollars, plus taxes. If your Airpoints account is based in Australia – meaning your Airpoints Dollars are treated like Australian Dollars – flights start from 120 Airpoints Dollars, plus taxes.
Here is the Air New Zealand partner airline reward chart for Australia-based members:
And here it is for New Zealand-based members:
Note that Air New Zealand uses kilometres – not miles, which is the industry standard – to measure a flight’s distance! The sweet spot here is domestic flights just under 2,000km in length, which includes routes like Brisbane-Adelaide and Perth-Alice Springs.
Here are some examples of Qantas flights we found available for booking using Airpoints Dollars on the Air New Zealand website…
1. Melbourne to Sydney (706km) for 125 Airpoints Dollars + $20.40 taxes
2. Brisbane to Adelaide (1,621km) for 150 Airpoints Dollars + $26.40 taxes
3. Melbourne to Perth (2,706km) for 250 Airpoints Dollars + $20.50 taxes
4. Sydney to Darwin (3,150km) for 375 Airpoints Dollars + $35.10 taxes
As only Economy awards are available, there aren’t too many exceptional deals available – something that can also be said of the Airpoints frequent flyer program in general. But this Airpoints reward seat we found from Brisbane to Lord Howe Island isn’t bad value, considering a cash fare would cost $539 one-way:
