Since early 2020, Qantas Frequent Flyer members can earn points when filling up or shopping in-store at participating BP petrol stations.
By linking your Qantas Frequent Flyer account to your BP Rewards account and choosing Qantas Points as your points preference, you can earn:
- 1 Qantas point per litre of regular fuel,
- 2 Qantas points per litre of BP Ultimate Unleaded 98 fuel, and
- 1 Qantas point per $1 spent on eligible BP in-store purchases.
To earn points, you would need to scan your Qantas Frequent Flyer or BP Rewards card at the checkout.
In February 2022, Qantas Frequent Flyer and BP also launched the ability to redeem Qantas points for fuel at BP outlets. To do this, you’d need to scan your Qantas Frequent Flyer card at BP and select the option to pay with Qantas points when prompted. You’d also need to enter the four-digit Reward Code displayed above your digital membership card in the Qantas App.
You would also need this Reward Code if choosing to pay with Qantas points at selected restaurants. You can read more about how this works on the Qantas website.
Alternatively, you can choose to put Qantas points towards your fuel purchase before filling up when using the BPme app to pay.
Is redeeming Qantas points for petrol good value?
If you choose to use your Qantas points towards a BP purchase, you’ll need to spend 1,900 Qantas points to get a $10 discount. That works out to give you a value of around 0.53 cents per Qantas point, making it one of the worst-value ways to spend Qantas points. (HOYTS and restaurant redemptions offer slightly worse value with a conversion rate of 0.5 cents per Qantas point.)
By comparison, you can often get several cents per Qantas point worth of value when redeeming for Classic Flight Rewards or flight upgrades. Hotel bookings and wine purchases also offer better value than fuel redemptions.
If you’re happy to cash out your Qantas points for fuel, then by all means, go ahead. But if you regularly fill up at BP and would rather point your points towards fuel discounts, you’d be better off collecting BP Rewards points rather than Qantas points.
That’s because you’ll only need 500 BP Rewards points to get a $5 fuel discount, or 1,000 BP Rewards points to get a $10 discount. So, you’ll earn that $10 petrol saving almost twice as quickly with BP Rewards points.
It’s easy to accidentally redeem Qantas points for fuel
We’ve been contacted by multiple AFF readers who’ve accidentally redeemed their Qantas points for petrol without realising it.
After scanning their Qantas cards at the point of sale, they’ve accidentally selected the option to use their Qantas points towards the payment when prompted on the payment terminal. (This can be easy to do if you’re in a hurry and don’t check which button you’re pressing.) They’ve then entered their Reward Code, thinking this was needed in order to earn points – only to get a nasty surprise when checking their Qantas points balance.
Unfortunately, once you’ve finalised the transaction, it can be very difficult to get your Qantas points back. Some people have had success in getting the transaction reversed after contacting BP Rewards or the Qantas Frequent Flyer Service Centre. But this doesn’t always work, and even if you do manage to get the points back, it could cost you hours of your time on the phone.
Ultimately, since you’ve technically agreed to use your points for fuel at the point of sale, Qantas is not obliged to refund your points. So the easiest solution is to disable the option on your BP Rewards account so that you can’t spend your points on fuel in the first place.
How to ensure you don’t waste your Qantas points at BP
Firstly, when paying for fuel at BP, be sure to read the options on the payment terminal carefully and don’t enter your Reward Code if you don’t want to redeem your Qantas points.
Secondly – and this is the best method – you can disable the ability to redeem Qantas points at BP in the BPme app settings. Simply switch off the “Points redemption” option under “Loyalty Preferences”:
