Singapore Airlines has some great Premium Economy airfares available from Sydney and Melbourne to New York via Singapore, starting at around $3,317 round-trip.
This is priced similarly to Philippine Airlines, and is almost half of what Qantas and Air New Zealand are charging for Premium Economy flights between Sydney and New York.
This Singapore Airlines pricing is available on various travel dates, including around the September school holidays. According to the fare rules, you’d need to book at least 60 days in advance.
Here’s one example of a fare available from Melbourne to Newark (Singapore Airlines flies to both Newark and JFK airports in New York):
You can also book from Sydney to New York for a similar price:
Some itineraries have rather long transit times in Singapore. However, this could be a nice way to break up the long trip. You can also choose to add a free stopover in Singapore if you want to stay longer.
Singapore Airlines does not offer Premium Economy from Australian airports other than Sydney and Melbourne. You could book this fare for a similar price from other cities including Brisbane, but the flights between Brisbane and Singapore would book into Economy Class.
Beware that Singapore Airlines may also offer Scoot flights between Australia and Singapore as part of this fare. For a better travel experience (and frequent flyer earning potential), try to ensure that all of your flights are operated by Singapore Airlines!
You can earn Virgin Australia Velocity points and status credits when flying Singapore Airlines. If crediting a round-trip booking from Sydney to New York in Singapore Airlines Premium Economy to Velocity, you could expect to earn at least 26,882 Velocity points and 480 status credits.
Admittedly, the travel times with Air New Zealand and Qantas to New York via Auckland are a bit shorter. But these more direct options are also significantly more expensive in Premium Economy.
