New amaysim roaming plans April 2023

amaysim 12 mth plans are 4G only. So is the 10 GB / 28 day plan and less.

32GB / 28d and up are 5G enabled.

I switched from Optus to Amaysim a few days ago in the UK, using a 12 month starter pack I'd bought from Woolies a few months ago.

Can confirm my phone now only connects to 4G while roaming, whereas previously roaming via Optus my phone would connect to 5G here.

Also another difference I noticed is roaming in the UK via Amaysim my phone is now preferring to connect to O2, even when other networks have a stronger signal. Previously on Optus it would usually be connected to EE or 3 (which usually have better coverage).

Yes, I noticed the 4G limit on 12mth and the lower monthly GB plans when I posted the earlier comment. But presumably that’s still probably ok for your extended travel needs? Cheaper than getting the $30 pm plan (which I’ve switched hex to). It’ll be a few months before I’m back in London to compare the difference.

Loss of 5G would be more annoying if I was stuck to one UK network, but with being able to switch between the UK networks to find the best 4G it's also no big deal.

I’m planning to resuscitate my GiffGaff SIM when I get to the UK. It still seems to be a decent option for local calls/txt, data and Euro roaming.

Any recommendations for other local prepaid (non contract) UK SIMs that support roaming in Europe (or even worldwide!).

Thought I would try to int roaming for data only add on for my European trip next month
Of course I now realise this will only work if I remove the sim from the modem and put it into the phone to activate the international roaming
It was only $50 and 12 months validity so not a prob if I did my dough.

Yes, the roaming bundle for a phone is good for calls/txt but so so for data. Although there are some data only roaming bundles that probably work well for say an iPad sim. But probably still better value to get a seperate eSIM.

Flexiroam has 20% of 5GB and up Local (Country), Regional and Global Plans at the moment. Ends 01 June but they also have regular promos. If you’re moving around Europe, a regional plan could make sense. Just compare across the usual providers for the best deals.

We’re still using our 12 year old Tesco prepaid “Triple-credit.”Sims in our phones whilst travelling, Currently travelling in Europe, and combining with an Alosim 5Gb/30 day ESIM (LTE and 5G) which you can top up. The calls I have made from the UK number have used the ESIM data , so haven’t been debited to the Tesco credit.
The 5Gb ESIM arrangement has worked well for our travelling needs. I might add that my second phone has my Boost (non international roaming) that works well for sms and 2FA. I can also make WiFi calls from my Oz number

Thanks. That looks similar to GiffGaff, although GG is possibly better (unlimited calls/txt and a bit more data per month).

Currently travelling in Europe, and combining with an Alosim 5Gb/30 day ESIM (LTE and 5G) which you can top up. The calls I have made from the UK number have used the ESIM data , so haven’t been debited to the Tesco credit.

I’ve been using (and will be on my next trip in a few weeks) Flexiroam eSIM. I’m still getting my head around their new pricing and plans but that’ll be a issue for subsequent trips.

The beauty of amaysim on an eSIM is there no need for a 2nd phone - other roaming services can be on your physical SIM or another eSIM and you can still make/receive calls and texts from your Oz number.

Fair enough. I could if I wish go to ESIM with Boost, but prefer to have a second phone as a backup, which I leave at my accommodation whilst travelling.

That’s actually a good reason to shift to eSIM for your Oz telco. If you lose your primary phone, you can reinstall an eSIM on a backup phone within minutes. None of the hassle of replacing a physical SIM when travelling.

My understanding is GiffGaff provides free EU roaming if you have an active plan. There’s a 5GB cap on data (per month I think). They also has a PAYG option (you need loaded credit).

Yep GiffGaff , that's the name of the Sim I selected at the random supermarket I visited a day after arriving in the UK. I think it was a £2 purchase for the SIM. I signed up online for a £10 one month package which included 15Gb total data with 5GB of EU roaming data within the total data...

But so long as you’re in the UK for a period, you can then use free roaming in Europe. If you don’t return to the UK after a certain amount of time, it shuts off again. The service itself is still active as PAYG. In fact, I can receive SMS here in Oz just turning that SIM on in my phone.

I’ll be testing this in a few months. I’ll be in London and then Amsterdam at the back end of my next trip in July/August and then return to Europe Christmas / New Year (and back to the UK). Hopefully GiffGaff will still have roaming active when I hit the ground in MUC in December and should be a complimentary service alongside amaysim. If not, I’ll just grab the best available eSIM for data.
