I just dropped off my parents at Brisbane, we stayed on the ramp for 5 - 10 mins. My wife popped in as we dropped off my parents and grabbed a couple of doughnuts for the kids.

I noticed the Traffic enforcement guy was on his computer as I drove off looking at me.

Before my wife went in I looked for signs about stopping and the only one clearly displayed is that the driver must stay with the vehicle (which I did).

After reading the FAQ about parking rules at Brisbane it appears I am only supposed to stay 2 minutes.

I am pretty annoyed.

Apart from the appeals process listed in the FAQ what are my options?

Can I just add that the ramp was nearly empty, this seems dishonest and a rort.

If your wife "popped in" to the terminal, then I expect there are two things that come into play:

The "traffic enforcement officer" could have expected that you were picking up from the drop-off area. And technically you were since your passenger came from inside the terminal.
You spent more time in the drop-off area than would normally be expected for a drop-off.

Given you posted at 10am, I assume you were at the airport around 9am or perhaps earlier. When I was dropped off by taxi around 7:10am, the drop-off area was certainly congested and if someone was waiting there for another who had popped into the terminal to purchase doughnuts, it certainly would have affected traffic flows.

I understand the short term parking is not as convenient as previous during the construction of the new multi-story parking facility, but the cost for short-term parking is very low ($2 for <15 mins from memory), so that may have been a mess costly option given the plan to escort the passenger to the terminal and buy doughnuts.

I doubt you have any recourse for avoiding the fine given the circumstances.

It was 1900hrs at Brisbane and the ramp had three cars on it at its busiest.

The Doughnuts were an impulse thing after checking the only sign on the ramp.

The ramp was nealy empty and signage was poor IMO.

You could have always done a lap, there are sufficient roundabouts I think.

I know that now.

:)

If I had seen a sign about 2 mins dropoff this whole thing wouldn't have happened.

Because they dont sign well they make lots of money in fines. This is wrong.

I recall fines have been challenged in SYD, maybe not for the same thing though? Either way, they’re not fines from a state parking inspector, so you might be able to choose not to pay… I don’t know the specifics.

are you sure you aren't jumping at shadows? I've been moved on plenty times at BNE without being booked. He might have been on his computer posting to AFF on a quiet night!

Cheers skip

One would have thought that if you were still there the parking officer would have given you a ticket, so it's maybe too soon to worry.
If you are given a subsequent ticket, then it's worth contesting it and see where you go.
The ramp being empty, or not being able to see the 2 minutes sign, don't seem to be valid excuses to me, but you could try them.

I don't see the "didn't see 2 minutes" notice as an excuse. Perhaps if they covered the notices up with bushes or duct tape then there's a case. I know people who have been similarly caught on city streets in having not seen the 'distant' No Standing signage (and no yellow lines painted).

In any case, you don't seem to have to panic about anything until you're actually served with the notice of infringement / fine to be paid. In the event you get said notice then you may consider your options to challenge. I'm no legal eagle let alone have the know-how on parking laws but I don't like your chances.

Worse still - would the infringement have taken place on government property or private property? If government, which level?

I think any tickets issued at airports are questionable at best. Pretty sure tickets issued at MEL some years ago were considered or found to be unenforceable.

That said, I really don't know, but I wouldn't be rushing to pay up.

Thanks guys, forewarned is forearmed.

:)

I'll see how it goes.

Im not telling you to do this but...

I have had a ticket for a drop off at BNE and I basically gave them the bird as I drove away knowing I was never going to pay it for the simple act of dropping someone off at an airport. In my case there were no spots to pull in and the CEO and his PA were very close to boarding, so I double parked while they quickly jumped out.

I was stopped for only the time it takes for 2 people to get out of a car 25 seconds at the most with the parking naz_ immediately adjacent to us.

The fine arrived at the office via Thrifty and I just binned it.

No recourse to date and that was about 18 months ago now

Are you certain that Thrifty didn't charge it to your credit card, plus a "service fee". I would expect the rental car agreement allows them to do so. First it would be a matter between Thrifty and the authority issuing the fine, and then the matter between you and thrifty.

If you are in a rent a car at BNE the easiest thing to do is use the rental car park to drop off, it also saves navigating the mess that occurs along that strip from the traffic, if you enter then turn right there is a large area that is often not populated with parked cars.

Nup - the fine came from BNE airport to our company - I am assuming Thrifty done a stat dec and hand-balled it to us. We were at the time being treated quite nice by thrifty due to a number of issues they had caused (equalling many thousands), so perhaps they felt it best not to add extra charges at that point in time...

As I said, I got the fine and binned it - literally

Wilson Parking in Perth is going through something similar at the moment, lobbying the relevant departments so that they can access details of people who have unpaid fines......
