With limited classic rewards flights being available at the moment I thought I would use 300,000 points to reduce the cost of a Tripadeal package to India for my wife and I.

Overall I though the trip was great value. . . but the flights were a big disappointment.

We just chose the economy flights option thinking we would be able to choose our seats in advance as we both have Qantas Gold Status.

It was only when the flight was confirmed we found we could not choose the seats, or request an upgrade.

Flying out we had the two middle seats in a row of four, but at least we were at the bulkhead. Not impressed with the fact that others on same package, without gold status , got aisle and window on an exit row.

Flying back the initial allocation was my wife on a middle seat of four on one row and me on an aisle seat in the row behind!

Managed to switch my wife to be next to me, at the check in desk, but no bulkhead, and again others on the same package got aisle and window on an exit row.

As thats how Qantas treats Gold members on a package it looks like I will be unlikely to book Tripadeal packages in the future.

Hmm, this is strange. As far as I know Qantas Gold should always get you seat select. No upgrade makes sense as it was probably a Economy Sale fare.

Does anyone know if there's a carve-out for the fare types that would be booked by Trip-a-Deal?

Did you try to check for seat selection at T-80 and was the flight full? I suppose it's possible that all of the seats accessible by SG and lower were already allocated?

Yes I did check at T-80.

On the plane there were some empty seats and some seats blocked off.

From TripADeal's flight policy: "Frequent flyer memberships cannot be used to upgrade flights or be used to determine airline selection."
I would have been more accepting about no seat selection if another airline was selected . But we were both Qantas FF Gold flying on a Qantas plane.

You need to not see tripadeal as Qantas and as a travel agent instead, which is what they exactly are.

Nothing inhibiting getting the booking number and entering it on the Qantas website and selecting seats, unless it's booked as a group fare. Which would be highly unlikely.

I have often entered the booking number into the website in the past when using a travel agent, to be able to select seats.
In this case when I entered the booking number and then clicked on the ‘change seats’ tab I was given the message that the booking was ineligible to select seats!

Except the TripaDeal T&Cs, quoted above?
