Once again the sub $500 AU-USA fares are back. Limited dates as usual but if you can make them work a great way to get to LOTFAP for a SC run out of HNL.

Sample dates:

A very good price, but having flown JQ to HNL for around that price last year, I probably wouldn't do it again. The overnight flight to HNL was just awful. Not to mention, the total price came to over $700 once I added the plus bundle, up-front seating etc.

But, if you can make it work, then good luck to you. :)

I wouldn't do such a long flight again on a JQ 787 either, even if it was free. Once bitten, twice shy. On the other hand, if it was one of the previous 332's, I might...

Sent the link to a friend who is hoping to join us in Hawaii next year. For those that don't need the frills (or SC), it's a great deal.

If flying in a tube of torture is worth more than a couple of hundred extra dollars, then yes, a wonderful deal

Depends on your priorities. I wouldnt do it, but the price for some is hard to pass up.

JQ prices look but then add SC and bags and that can be half the price of the fare

To put things in perspective, I payed more in taxes to fly HNL-SYD-BNE one way in J (plus 72K QF points).

Just to be clear, this deal is phenomenal and normal people who want to go to Hawaii on holiday should jump on it. I'm just an idiot who is too spoilt to fly Y :p

I can fly Y quite happily, but not on JQ 787's and some of the other medium-long haul LCC's.

For example, last month I flew FCO-ZRH-IST-BRU-ATH-CIA in economy, with the last sector being on Ryanair. Quite pleasant actually, especially with Star Gold (or Diners Club) access to lounges.

Im happy to fly Y, I just wont do it long haul on JQ.

Ok I'll bite, why would you fly on FR but not JQ?
I'm by no means a fan of JQ nor the B787 aircraft but I did get to fly with them few times, (usually sat in row 10) and found their overall Y product acceptable, definitely not inferior to other LCC carriers. If you have PriorityPass you get access to participating lounges.

Actually, I don't mind the JQ 320's on shorter flights, but definitely dislike the very squashy 788's. As far as FR is concerned, armed with priority boarding and a decent forward window/aisle seat it's quite an acceptable experience, especially as their on-time record is very good. I even prefer FR to easyJet, who tend to be more expensive for a similar experience.

Hopefully this isn't getting too OT, but I actually much prefer Easyjet to Ryanair. I find the whole Ryanair "experience" rather unpleasant, while Easyjet is not so bad.

Can you enlighten with reasons for the awfulness. I can imagine but nothing beats a review by an AFF commentator

Here's a summary of my reasons:

-The 787 seats are narrow, uncomfortable and the legroom is poor.

-The catering (what was included in the Plus Bundle) was not enough to stave off hunger. The only choice for dinner was fried rice, and I don't recall what breakfast was but it wasn't substantial. At least breakfast came with a complimentary coffee, juice or water - dinner did not.

-The flight was full of young children, despite not being even close to school holidays. There was no shortage of crying babies and kids running up and down the aisles all through the night, ensuring sleep was impossible.

-The flight timing is terrible. We left BNE at 5pm and arrived in HNL just before dawn at 6am. Having been unable to sleep at all on the flight, I arrived in HNL feeling like a zombie and couldn't check into my hotel until ~2pm.

-Want to use the IFE? That'll be $10. Want a blanket? That'll be $10. Want a coffee? That'll be $10. (OK, I'm exaggerating about that last one - it was more like $4...)

I dislike overnight flights in Y at the best of times, but this was one of the worst I've ever done.

I've done a few JQ flights on both the 330 and 787 in J and Y...

Yes the 787 Y seat is a little narrower than others - by maybe an inch - and I'm 6'3 and 100kg with wide shoulders, it's OK although three of me in a row would be interesting.

Pitch wise I actually think their is more room in the 787 than JQ 320 down below which is where it matters.

For the usual price it's good value imho

Also a damn sure more comfortable than Air Asia X D7

These fares have been coming up for the last few years and are great if you can make them work. I haven't priced up a QF fare to compare as there's no way they would be remotely comparable for a positioning flight to LOTFAP which was the main reason for the thread.

I hope your friend was able to take advantage of the fare :)

The best thing about these fares is that HA may put a sale on to match
