Currently stuck in a huge queue inbound at SYD.
None of the passport readers are working.
Everyone is being processed manually.
Reportedly nationwide.
Don't know about departures.

Edit: Understand that departures are similarly affected.

Looks dreadful. Good to hear ABC are aware of it ;) Given there are huge crowds just standing there....
Hope this doesn’t happen in 2 weeks time for us.

All those people, the heat and frustration must be terrible.

When we went through Sydney last week I said to hubby "One day they will actually fix the air circulation in here and get rid of these fans. Its like a Bunnings in summer every time you come through, fans blowing like a 80s rock video".

Good reminder of why it is worthwhile to turn up early. You could sail through in under 30 mins 90% of the time, and then this happens...

Sounds like a shamozzle even for the people who arrived the nominal 3hrs before flight. (... and I am sure no one here does that unless it's for lounge access)

And for us Adelaidians who have to use connecting flights that likely don’t have three hours of fat in the schedule.

I eventually got through after 50 minutes and I believe I was one of the lucky ones.
The only PA in that time was from Jetstar hectoring their pax about picking up their baggage.
Though there was an official walking around addressing a few people at a time and a desultory effort at handing out bottles of water.
The front end of the queue at least was remarkably good natured in the circumstances.

It was resolved by about noon on Monday 29 April.

Far from every flight was affected (i.e. by a tardy departure), which is odd because a few were. In this situation (departures), you'd think all would be, because I don't believe there's any 'calling forward' through immigration when it's manually processing passports,

We arrived at Syd at 7 am today from Icn to find Qs before the Duty Free shops and to learn that the Smart Gates were not working....initially we were hearing 1-2 hours to clear immigration but they opened up the "other passports" counters so we rushed to that line....about 45 mins all up cf to 2 mins with Smartgate to clear immigration! The baggage carousels were not coping with all the unclaimed luggage. It was total mayhem!

Can you actually see the light in places like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, through the smog? ;)

I have a secret confession to make - hush hush. I was born and lived many decades in Adelaide and visit there a couple times a year. But I did see the light eventually.
