Nice intro to Tashkent from the NYTimes. "Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital, is home to one of the world’s most ornate subway systems. Many of its 29 stations are elaborately decorated with mosaics and chandeliers, the artwork reflecting a range of themes — from the Soviet space program to elements of local history, industry and agriculture. " Works in a bit of history too.

I realise this is an old thread, but I visited Tashkent recently and I think this was one of the most beautiful metro systems anywhere. Beautifully decorated stations with a distinctly Soviet feel, and a mix of old Soviet rolling stock combined with modern new trains.

A convenient service too, with trains every few minutes and the fare costs around 18 cents. You can even pay by tapping an international credit card at the gate.
