Qantas have had an extra 747 based at Melbourne since OEI returned from maintenance in HKG. They are rotating the aircraft that isn't in use each day - today it is OJT. Normally this aircraft would be in SYD.

Could this be due to not enough space at SYD?

The past week there has been more QF widebodies on the ground as some of the daily flights were not scheduled I assume due to low demand.

For example, QF63 didn't operate Monday, QF73 didn't operate Thursday, QF117 didn't operate Mon-Wed, QF129 didn't operate Tuesday.

Unless there have been ferry flights dumping aircraft in Melbourne, then I'd expect that this is simply a consequence of not having the same daily operations out of the place.

Yes it was a ferry flight from HKG to MEL when it would normally go to SYD.
Daily operations out of MEL have been normal.

It would only go to Sydney if the next planned use was from there. Over the years, I've dropped ferries off at a number of places.

It is a spare at the moment and normally spares are based in SYD not MEL but yes I take your point that not all ferry flights are to SYD.
