Searching on AFF forums

I'm normally a Google-fu in my daily life, but I'm having real trouble finding things using the search function here. Too often I'm hit with the message the words are too long, too short or too common.

Any tips, other than searching via Google?

Not really, I use google with site specifier for such searches:

AFF Advanced Search via Google

The search function is very poor. Whether that's responsible for an increasing number of new threads on existing topics that then actually makes it more difficult to find what you're looking for, I don't know.

The main problem in the past has been the resource required to generate and store index tables for all words of 3 characters or more when compared to that needed for words of four characters or more.
