Single ticket protection between alliances and LCC's

A question to the experienced ones. I came across a claim which I wanted to check before confirming or refuting it (it was in response to a FB post I made).

The claim is that if you have different alliances on the same ticket, you would lose the protections in case of missing a connection. E.g., you have QF SYD-BKK and on the same ticket TG BKK-LHR, and QF is late, you would not be automatically rebooked on a next suitable & available BKK-LHR service (or routing between the two). Is this really true or would the protection in case of delays apply also between alliances?

How about if you use LCC's? E.g. TR SYD-SIN --> AK SIN-xKUL-HND?

I assume the luggage is checked through or not based on the interline agreements and airline policies / arrangements (which with LCC's would invariably mean handling it yourself at connection points).
