Probably been asked before, but can anyone shead light on whether this is a good J experience?

Herring bone configuration

Flight time is 14 hours

I have an existing points booking on CX SYD/HKG/YVR in J for 22-24 hours

What would you suggest to go with (existing CX) or I can get a *A booking on Air Canada:D

Have done the other direction, liked it a lot, CX also good but not thinking I'd travel an extra 10 hours for them! Fully flat seat, good service, good IFE

Tks.

Also checking SYD/AKL/YVR on Air NZ using *A points as a further option

I concur, no point in spending 10 extra hours commuting!!

My experience on SYD-YVR was a couple of years ago, but it was overall surprisingly good. The other flights on AC (YVR-YYZ, YYZ-HAV-YYZ, YYZ-CDG) weren't that flash.

Food was fine, felt OK in the herringbone, service great. It's a long flight but beats the transfer via Asia.

I did this return a couple of months ago and was pretty happy with the experience.

Salient points.

Lounges not up to QF standard. In fact at YVR I skipped the lounge and paid for a drink/bite in the main terminal area rather than endure paint stripper wine in the lounge. However, they do have good wi-fi and are comfortable enough for a short while.

The hard product is excellent. Very comfortable seats, airy cabin, good ife. Really at the upper end of J comfort. Avoid 6k though as it abuts the storage cupboard and lacks privacy

Although the serving staff were old enough to remember the Wright bro's first flight - experience told. A champagne was in my hand as soon as I arrived at my seat. Drappier is a little sweet for me, but I wasn't saying no when they topped up. Drinks order was taken before take off (LAN take note) and I had a very pleasant Italian white in hand as soon as the seatbelt signs were off. Mixed nuts with drinks...all good.

I chose lamb and noted that it was good, if not fine.
I also noted that I really warmed to the service as the flight progressed. The staff were quirky and engaging and couldn't do enough to ensure your comfort (in my case making sure my glass was always topped up). Smiles seemed genuine and I thought AC really got it right in giving a positive impression of their country and culture.

In summary, if the schedules fit I'd not hesitate to recommend the flight.

Indeed I'm planning a trip in December and will probably do AC both legs rather than QF via LAX as the comfort and convenience outweigh the chance to earn points.

Many thanks for your comments

Am considering a ski trip in Feb 2013!

Couldn't help but smile when I read this as it does match my experience, yes they were (much) older but service was very good and none of that false best mate stuff you sometimes get south of the border. I thought wine selection was fine but maybe my less than stellar expereince with United just prior helped set my expectation lower!
