Does anyone know a way to see Thai Airways award availability without having to transfer points to them? I have a zero balance with them and want to see availability before I transfer any Amex points. Failing that, does anyone know if availability shows up if you have at least some Royal Orchid Plus miles even if they're not enough for the flights you search?

Well I have been looking for and booking TG J awards on lifemiles.
Seats.aero has them but unless you pay you can only view 2 months out.
Some of the other Star Alliance members such as UA should show them up.

But like other airlines, TG may not be showing all of it's availability to some/all Star Alliance airlines (Singapore is a classic).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I think the only way is to call Thai.

That said, I'd avoid the Royal Orchid Plus program unless there are no other options. It's really not good value.
