Hi. Was wondering if anyone could tell me what time the lounge opens in Melbourne? Can't seem to find it on the website. I have a Cathay flight departing at 7.40am so wanted to relax in the lounge before the flight. Hoping to have the ricotta pancakes and a glass of Tattinger for breakfast. Thanks...

Yes it's open early, but are you entitled to the Flounge on a CX flight? I know the J lounge is available as a OWE. I will be interested to see what our learned AFF friends had to say

1st class lounge access is available to anyone departing on a OW carrier in 1st class or those with OWE status

QF25 leaves at 0600 (at least tomorrow) so they would surely need the lounge open for the pax on that flight, so I’d imagine you’ll be fine.

The Qantas Club is open from 0430.

The Qantas MEL First class lounge opens after 3:30am for QF25 and stays open until QF29 boards. The actual opening time may depend if there are any eligible QF25 PAX (Emerald).

(The F check-in also opens around 03:30 but closes later in the mornin g after the last eligible QF93 passenger has checked-in. It re-opens shortly after noon and again closes after the last eligible QF133 PAX, re-opening at around 19:20 for QF29)

I'd be curious to hear the earliest time (relative to your flight) that someone has used F check-in in MEL. Are they happy to take your bags 6+ hours in advance assuming they're open?

It's not applicable for my trip this week but if I was flying out on a weekend I could see myself arriving nice and early to relax in the F lounge.

I'm curious about this too actually (SYD). I spoke to QF and they checkin (QF31) only opens 3hrs before departure (as per normal), but will they usually allow you to check in a bit earlier? I've checked in 3.5hrs early in the past before. Is 4+ usually OK?

We haven't got much else to do all day, so figured we'd make the most of the SYD F lounge. :D

Cheers,
- Febs.

I've been refused check-in at SYD 3.5 hrs prior to a flight . Mind you at that time was only a lowly SG flying F so that may have had something to do with it ! ;)

Thanks for all your posts. We had a great breakfast in the lounge though even I have to admit - Tattinger Chamapgne at 5.45am is a bit too early in the day even for me!!! Pancakes were still as good as ever and we had the lounge all to ourselves.

Had a great flight on Cathay in Biz as well.

How about at MEL?
I'm on QF29 next week, and was planning on arriving at the airport around 1800 for dinner, and maximising chance of getting both massage and facial for me and gf (yes, I'm a bit greedy, I know ).

Can we drop bags at 1800, 5 hours before departure?

First Class check-in is unlikely to be open at that time. (see post #5) - you might be able to utilise the business class check-in if it's still open.

The Spa re-opens around 7:30pm.

Thanks serfty. I guess we might have to sample the wine list before our massage :)

Using the First check-in is obviously not a big deal; any counter will do as long as they take my bags away. The website states check-in is open 0330-0000, so as long as they don't say 'That flight isn't open yet' then we should be right. Or does it no longer make sense for a flight to 'not be open' now that we can OLCI at T-24?

When I took QF29 earlier this year, the F checkin opened around 7:20pm. At check-iin they phoned through and got me the first spa appointment. The girl said she'd never seen anyone make the first appointment of the evening (7:15ish apparently).

They only have 4 appointments or so apparently, and there were only 2 available that evening, so it pays to be there earlier than later.

I checked in at 7:20pm a few weeks back. I was in the lounge within 10 minutes and asked if any treatments were available. I was told they were fully booked but the therapist came and found me and said I could have a shorter one (presumably the balance of the 7:15 slot) which I accepted.

Very timely thread.

My next flight gets me the coveted WP status. As a result, and in anticipation of the momentous event, I have booked myself and my special friend (already WP) on JQ003 MEL/SYD on 3 January, ETD 1400.

Our goal is to maximise the time in the FLounge.

In theory, can we check in with the QF093 peeps? Both of us will have carry on only.

Most grateful for the advice.

I'll be interested to the answer to this but my guess is that you'll need to use the Jetstar check in. I'm going to take this flight in December and I assume they open up a checkin counter but traffic would be fairly light?

Jetstar pax have to check in with Jetstar at the Jetstar desks (regular economy desks for everyone but *Class and CL pax). They open around T-3 hours (though usually later rather than sooner). Can't do OLCI for these flights either.

Kind of sucks, but that's the best you can do.

Also, hope that QF93 isn't delayed or cancelled or they may close the F lounge since they don't seem to account for JQ pax, and you could be spending your coveted lounge time in the J dungeon. Sadly happened to me on my first F lounge run as WP. :(

JQi will have their own check-in counter and would open a little after 11am for a 2pm flight.

People start queuing well before that - if you want to maximize anticipated FLounging time (and are not travelling *Class) then you'll need to be near the head of the queue.

Thx djfuzz and QF029.

As soon as I hit "submit", I realised the fatal flaw in the plan. So, in theory, the earliest we can check in is 1100. Luckily, we are both in *class. Although previous experience suggests *class check in is not all that speedy.
