Valentine's Day miles offer

Is my calculations correct that this offer is 2.1 Aussie cents per mile which makes it cheaper than the December promo?

EDIT: Doesn't matter. I forgot to add 7.5% tax.

More like 2.1 US cents which is about the same as the December promo ?
US2045/98000

It works out to be 2.087 US cents per mile, including sales taxes and processing fee. This is assuming you purchase the maximum, 80k + 18k.

I assume the prices at moment given include the 10% discount.

The main advantage compared to the December promo is the ability to stockpile more miles for your annual limit, in a single hit.

You can squeeze a bit more out of this promotion by buying 60k + 18k, then buying 20k + 5k, giving a total of 103k miles. The overall rate drops to 2.02 US cents per mile as well - the first purchase of 60k + 18k works out to be 1.98 US cents per mile; the latter one of 20k + 5k works out to be 2.15 US cents per mile.

This is great, thanks! I can't remember the last time they had a discount, bonus and increase in annual limit at the same time?

Cost works out to $0.018 usd per mile at the 40k and 60k levels including bonuses. Not bad at all really.

… to be closely followed by a big devaluation?

Would be very surprised if there wasn't a devaluation when AAdvantage and USDM merge and combine points/miles. Needless to say I am not purchasing any USDM miles and holding onto them hoping they will be worth the same when they convert to AA. The ratio may be 1:1 but that won't matter.

I recommend only purchasing them if you plan to use to them soon (before the programs merge). But then again, YMMV

Be aware that the 10% discount is only applicable as follows:

"AAdvantage members must purchase 20,000 AAdvantage miles or more in a single transaction from the buyAAmiles® program beginning 12:00 am CT February 3, 2014, to 11:00 pm CT February 6, 2014, to be eligible for the 10% discount off the mileage price."

i.e. there is only a 3 day window in which the 10% discount applies.

So when does the 10% discount apply? Is it already factored into the price on the first screen when you choose amount of miles to be purchased?

It looks that way to me. Mind you the change in exchange rate since last year probably covers the discount :!:

Last year 40,000 miles cost me:

Need some advice on this if it's till working. Parents going to LHR in J soon and might be an idea way of getting them there. If I'm reading correctly it's about 2k for about 90k miles and LHR is 45k each way in J? Can two individuals buy 80k miles on no status and redeem them?

Australia to LHR is not 45k each way in J! Not sure how you got that - it is 60k each way, or 120k return.

I can't remember if there are purchase time restrictions for new accounts, a la US DM. My hunch is there isn't any (i.e. you could join AA today, buy miles tomorrow and be fine). I would make a note to tell your credit card provider in advance of purchasing miles for the first time, so there's no "fraud" surprises.

Yep. I only have one account so wouldn't make it. Could get them Josh J to dbx but with taxes it's Prob just cheaper to fly! Going to have to get you to sit down with my dad and explain points in credit cards to him next week!
