Just noticed a new "Buy miles" promo link on the aa.com homepage - 50% bonus miles until December 31st with an increased calendar year purchase limit of 60k (i.e. purchase 60k miles + receive 30k bonus = 90k miles total for US$1808.75).

Cheers,
Mike

Damn! I just bought the 2k bonus for every 6k and got 40k + 12k bonus...
Oh well, I can get another 20k + 10k bonus.
I guess any bonus is exactly that and not to be expected.

this seems rather a good deal. I must 're examine the award chart. pity cx flights not available online. are the call centre good ?

gahhh really shouldn't have bought 20k...wasn't expecting a 50% bonus offer, only ever do 60k+20k bonus :(

guess it doesn't matter since i couldn't afford to buy 60k anyway...

Re CX flights, know exactly what flights you want and have alternatives in case there is no reward availability. I did HKG-JFK (with a stopover in YVR) in F earlier this year. Just magnificent.

I actually started in SIN but got the main flight worked out and then said I actually wanted to start in SIN and had my connecting flight number ready. All went well.

Has everyone had a look at this?

You could buy 80k miles:

...and get yourself e.g. this:

MEL-LHR (oneway) in QF F for USD1737! (J class on this route would be USD1294). Maybe use LifeMiles for the return journey?

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

yes this is good! They do it every year around this time (increase max miles to 60k). Combine with your new buying allowance in Jan next year and you can get some decent flights. However bonus points can take up to six weeks to post (havent read the T&Cs with this one yet).

edited - seems mbonus miles to be posted within 5 days this time! (bonus!)

Off topic but yes this is good. Admittedly it will only get you one-way (the award chart is given as one-way only), so you do need to find your way back.

I think this promo is rather unique. They have this kind of promo each year around Christmas, but this is the first time I can recall that the bonus allows you to get 90k in a single whack.

You can actually get 90k right now if you buy the full 60k (temporarily raised annual limit, usually 40k per calendar year), assuming you have not purchased or been gifted any AA miles at all this year.

This is not quite as good value as US DM (viz. using US DM's Buy Miles bonuses only), but as far as oneworld goes, it's good.

I'm not sure on the rules of stopovers etc. with AA awards; I think it's generally one en route stopover. (All the advice on the web is US-centric, which doesn't help).

Mods: probably need to move posts to the other thread...

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

i think the stopover might be on AA metal? My PEK-HKG-SYD one way was not allowed a stopover in HKG.

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

I guess to take advantage of this Perth people would either have to take hopefully an included additional J flight to Mel or Syd or else you booked it for after the EK 380 starts flying into Perth reputedly after mid year 2013 if the QF/EK tie up is approved... If an AA award could be used to book a QF codeshare on EK metal??? Else no F from Perth... Still not as good a value as the USDM for being able to get multi-continent itineraries it seems....

For those who did list flying QF F long haul on their bucket list it does seem eminently achieveable i suppose...

like most award programs, I would expect code shares are excluded, especially since EK is not part of one world. However, it's a short business class hop to singapore to connect.

Oh wait.

QF won't fly to London via Singapore.

Guess there's always BA via SIN/HKG/NRT

Re: US Dividend Miles Buy/Gift Miles 100% bonus - Cheap way for F/J *A Awards

Yeah, we're a bit screwed in Perth using AA awards as you either have to fly EK from PER to DXB or EK SIN-DXB unless as you say we fly mostly other airlines than QF... Or we go to the East Coast first...

BA attracts hefty fuel surcharges with AA though.

Dazz81 - I recently made a booking for Feb 2013 doing Sydney > Cairns (QF) > Hong Kong (CX) > Phnom Penh (KA) all for 35K points in Business. I have access to KVS so was easily able to pick the dates and flights. The call centre were fine, although there was an additional $80 telephone ticketing service fee in addition to $102 in taxes. Overall, still a brilliant deal though, my flight from CNS > HKG is showing the new Cathay Business seat which I'm looking forward to trying.

PS I got the latest offer in my email overnight. Very tempting, at least we have until Dec 31st to decide whether to buy or not!

I have just purchased my 60,000 miles + 30,000 bonus. It will be interesting to see how long these take to credit comapred to US Airways purchases. Fortunately I only need the 60,000 for my booking, the 30,000 bonus (which doesn't come through quickly) goes to future travel.

tems and conditions say the bonus miles will post after 5 days. which is a change from previous promos where points posted 4-6 weeks after the END of the promo period.

regarding the earlier point that these are one way... true... but you can buy again in January!

True... but unless they run the same kind of promo (or any promo for that matter), it won't be at the same excellent rate we're getting here. It's also worth reminding everyone that the cap of buying or being gifted points is 40k per calendar year (except for temporary increases in the cap as shown here).

It's overall still good value (F return (or almost) for about $4k, assuming from a standing start).......

AA runseveral promos each year, they are usually 30%. Did the same for the last couple of years. I think next Jan (or very early in the new year, whenever they run the promo - might be Feb/mar) you can buy another 52K. Total 140K over these two calendar years.
