I have been making some bookings of late on AA.com and suffering the usual Indian call centre problems, one of which was an amusing corruption of my address and for which I received an even funnier call from the AA office at Mascot as they saw the funny side of it. But more seriously they recognised the problem.
I wrote to AA using their feedback window about the problems of the current arrangements and imploring them to add Australian credit cards to the list on AA.com. I received the rather promising reply in just one hour from an employee at AA.com Web Services which included the following:

Dear Mr. openseat,
Thank you for your interest in American Airlines. We want to respond to you, our AAdvantage Platinum customer first.
Please know, the request to add Australia to our "Worldwide Sites" is currently under review and should be implemented in the near future.
So I think we could all help the move by giving AA a gentle nudge.

Much better answer than I received 2 months ago. They did however say they were considering considering it.It will make life much easier.

This might not be all good tho, especially for ATWs.

At the moment, there is no fee for purchasing over the phone in Australia , so for AA bookings can currently just hold and purchase over the phone

If they allow online purchases, I suspect a telephone booking fee would come in which would generally be, imo, a negative thing

Yikes, I didn't think of that Dave. Thanks for keeping our feet on the ground.

What sort of charge are they going to implement for phone bookings? $20 ? $50 ? (keeping in mind that the UK charge is 20 pounds I think, and the US charge $20)

That's a pittance when dealing with a DONEx, and compared to the benefits that having AA allowing Australian credit cards bring a negligible disadvantage in my books.

Bring on AA allowing Australian credit cards without fudging.

Less of a pittance when dealing with LONE4s, especially when there is a family travelling; At the moment, the only fudge is to put UK as credit card address and if it has a problem call and do it over the phone, so fairly trivial imo.

Most of the activity I do with AA is for bookings which cannot be done online ( such as ATWs ) so a telephone fee would be purely negative for me

MAybe they wouldn't instigate a fee and it would be a purly positive change

It would be nice to have the option though. When I was in the UK and was trying to pay for my DONE4 it was a nightmare and in the end cost me (well the company) GBP25 to fax the form to Oz. That was after I spent two hours trying to find somewhere I could print the form...

It woulnd't have helped you though since a DONE4 cannot be paid for online anyway

Dave

Yes - but the assumption is (in my first response) if you can pay online that should mean you can pay over the phone as well.

Umm.. But you can pay over the phone already. If you pay the Australian office however, and the cost is > $1000 then they require a fax to confirm it; this would not likely change

UK office will take Australian credit cards but charge the telephone fee

If you have status with AA, I believe that the US office should also take an Australian credit card, but not 100% sure on that

Dave

As this was a DONE4 it was a tad over $1000 ;) The problem I had was being able to print the form to fax them as on a sunday afternoon I couldn't find anywhere to print it...

On 2nd January I booked 6 USA domestic KUP fares on the internet, and that was fine, but then it took me 90 mins plus on the phone (this included three calls that were disconnected) to pay them. So, I am for the AUS credit card being used.

Now for the stupidity thread...within 10 mins of finalising the payment I noticed I had put my christian and surname around the wrong way in the booking, so it then cost me a further AUD$115 to have the tix reissued. However, it was very lucky that I noticed the error when I did otherwise I would have had to buy a new tix at the airport when they realised the incorrect name on the tix. I would have probably booked over 65 flights on the internet and never done this before, so I suppose $115 is a cheap lesson for what could have ended up a disaster.

I suspect that the requirement to send a fax won't disappear though since there is no real reason at the moment for it other than to protect the airline against fraud. I'm all for being able to properly use an ozzie credit card online; im just concerned that there might be negatives associated with the change

They have done for me, when making changes to a DONE4. It was the first time the operator had done it, and she had to fudge a few of the fields (5-digit zip code etc). We just guessed them and it turned out fine. I seem to remember that she did it because I was Exec Plat.

AA already does have fuel fines however they are required to include them in their base fare; e.g. on a transatlantic trip, there is a $91 surcharge
