That is a legitimate bargain!

Its indeed a great price..

Qantas/LAN charge what ever they want because of lack of competition.

The only downside is Aerolíneas Argentinas. They are the South American version of Qantas for price and Jetstar for product.
I flew EZE - SYD on their 747 and they are still living in 1990s.

At least most of the flying would be on Air New Zealand. The Aerolineas Argentinas legs between Buenos Aires and Rio/Sao Paulo are under 3 hours.

...Qantas/LAN charge what ever they want because of lack of competition.....

Although historically that is correct (I have been flying between Sth America and Australia consistently for the last 35 years) I have now gained hope with the entrance of Air New Zealand into the market. As Mattg said, with this deal you "should" be doing the main leg on NZ.

I was initially disappointed with NZ's startup pricing on the AKL-EZE route, but hopefully this is the start of a gentle price war with LAN/QF.

Have you been looking at Air NZ prices from AKL-EZE or Australia-xAKL-EZE? I've found that they are lower for bookings originating in Australia (no doubt thanks to competition from QF).

The long haul legs are 100% operated by Air NZ, so no chance of being on AR for these. Also, the AR intra-South America operation is vastly superior to their long haul operation.

LAN is now offering similarly low-priced (albeit slightly higher) fares from Australia to various destinations in South America, including Buenos Aires, Santiago, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Travel on QF metal to SCL should be allowed.

e.g. SYD-EZE is $1215 return. MEL-GIG or SYD-GRU is $1335 return. Travel from 8 May - 24 June 2016.

Qantas are also offering reasonable fares to SCL and LIM. For example, SYD-LIM is now $1298 return.

Planning to maybe do S. Am next year so hopefully the low prices stick around...

Re: Australian cities to rio de janeiro or sao paulo, brazil from only $1107 aud retu

Was quite interested initially when I received the LAN email offer. Unfortunately my aim is to transit CCS at some part of my journey and it is quite expensive and lengthy to do so from a South American step off. Probably better to incorporate it into a N.American trip.

Re: Australian cities to rio de janeiro or sao paulo, brazil from only $1107 aud retu

AirNZ has been running near-continuous sales on this route. I'm flying SYD-AKL-EZE in Premium Economy next week and returning EZE-AKL-SYD in business for $A3.6K - a pretty sweet deal if you ask me!

The difference in NZ's ex-AU and ex-NZ fares is predictably huge - you'll pay approximately 50% more for PE fares if you start your journey in NZ, despite cutting out the 2,600 mile roundtrip across the Tasman. AirNZ says the route is performing well but you have to wonder what the yields are like...
