2025 travel plans

Interested in how many days you are planning for Alhambra - I've been to Seville and Malaga before but keen to get to Cordoba and Grenada. I also missed out on Porto last year when I was ill so maybe this time. I love Lisbon
We are just back from a trip similar to @MARTINE’s and we spent 2 days in Grenada. That was comfortable for us. We spent a full day at the Alhambra, which was a big day, but enough. Don’t forget to buy your tickets on line in advance to save heap and heaps of time at the gates. Definitely worth paying for the full ticket that includes the Nasrid Palaces which are just stunning. Be sure to use the official ticket site as imposter sites charge you up to €30 more than the official site for tickets. The other day was spent just walking the hills of the city, enjoying the views, the narrow laneways, little shops and food.

We stayed in Monjas Del Carmen - a repurposed convent in Grenada and it was lovely. It was walking distance to most things including Alhambra (about 20 mins or so, but all uphill) and one short block from the bus stop where you can catch the city minibus to the Alhambra for a very reasonable fare (€2 or €3 from memory, I can consult my diary if you really want to know it). We took the bus on the way down after a full day walking around the Alhambra. They use minibuses because the streets are so narrow and wind about so much a regular bus would not stand a chance! The drivers have amazing skill. If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer them. Also about Córdoba, which was fantastic. We stayed there at Hesperia Córdoba, which was also great and had a full view of the river, Roman arch bridge and old town. Beautiful.

Arrrrh! I've seen most or northern, southern and western Spain, except for Cordoba, which I always wanted to see. In August, I have 5 days devoted to around Barcelona (incl Tarragona) and 3 days of this was going to be up in the Pyrenees. Didn't think I could whip down to Cordoba as well, but if I nix the mountains, I could, with ease - train abt 5 hrs, full day, 2 nights there.

A trans-Iberian dash - too silly?

PS and where is the TR? 😅

Nothing in travel is too silly except Cordoba in August wouldn't be my choice

Getting very itchy feet at the moment

Well, it all depends on what you like really! I haven’t been to Barcelona or the Pyrenees so I have no yardstick to measure what you would be giving up and how much our mileagesmight vary but…Córdoba was great from our perspective. A beautiful old town (but I guess much like other old towns), very walkable, great food with the North African influence. The highlight was the cathedral mosque which was just stunning. The sequestered quadrangle full of fruit trees and fountains. The view from the bell tower. And the old Roman bridge is beautiful and photogenic. If you go, there is an interesting free explanatory mini museum in the lower floor of the tourist information centre that helped us understand the history of the place, which is amazing. This is NOT well sign posted - we found it as we searched out the loos! A full day would do the town justice. You might also consider taking a walking tour. We usually do this, but weren’t able to book one in English in the low season on our 1 available day (2 night visit). Also, in August it would potentially be very hot, and crowded, but I guess that’s the case in all tourist towns in Spain. You’d also probably want to find out how to purchase advance tickets for the Cathedral Mosque which will certainly be very busy at that time.

And I will do a TR very soon. Been home for 6 days now and spent 5 of those in bed with something that might as well be COVID- RATs all negative but symptoms suggest if it’s not Covid it’s her little sister!

I got a few hints about Cordoba from the recent Michael Portillo series

Well I tried to book a Qantas reward CBR-MEL-CMB-MEL reward ticket today, and it all went swimmingly until the final screen when it just said it couldn't do it. Shame on Qantas' IT. But nothing unusual.

I believe it will work for MEL-CMB-MEL, but it objects to the Canberra connection, which I need for the taxes to exceed $500 (good old CBA free TI).

I am planning to fly onward from CMB to ATH on a revenue ticket for approx $2,350 on QR and RJ.

A few days in ATH, then DBV and a few days in the UK (without having to pay the GBP10 tax).

Perhaps a call to Hobart in the morning might fix it?

Thank-you so much @Seat0B — the reason I wanted to spend two nights in Alhambra is I wish to use as my base for a day in Malaga and then going back to Madrid. I really want to have full day to appreciate Alhambra rather than just a day trip. Cordoba is definitely on my radar

What have you got planned for Malaga?

We are just back from a great trip that took in Madrid, Sevilla, Granada and Córdoba and it was great!

Your work trips sound amazing!
Thanks @Seat0B ! I’ve done MAD and BCN to death (both 2 x in last 2 years alone) and was keen on building a long itinerary to tick off the other cities (1 month in Spain and 1 month ‘working from home’ in BER to improve my budding German!) I’m going back to MAD for Madrid Pride, which I went last year as well (but returning because it was an amazing experience, largest pride in Europe, several districts get closed down in the final 3-4 nights for street parties - including the Mr Gay España paegent with the winners from the 17 regions of Spain facing off in the capital, which is a total hoot - that stretch across different plazas around Gran Via!) Question, did you travel around Spain by Renfe? And did you find it cheaper buying individual tickets or the Renfe pass? That’s what i’m trying to figure out atm and not sure if the Renfe pass restricts your ability to book onto trains at more popular times or whether it is open slather?)

As an aside, doing Berlin a bit differently this time and staying in a (surprisingly cheap even by Berlin standards) medium-term serviced apartment initiative with shared living, rooftop lounging and co-working spaces (Circus Living Berlin) with ppl who stay there being ppl who are or considering moving to Berlin (min. 28 nights).

I agree with many ppl here re BCN, I really didn’t love it on my first visit back in 2014 but its really grown on me over the years. It doesn’t have that classic European al fresco dining and aperol spritz sipping vibe that you normally get in Med hotspots (which is very strange since there are plenty of beaches). Maybe it’s cos most of the sights tend to be away from the beaches and surrounded by narrow medieval lanes? But museums, nightlife and the beach are big ticket items for me and I quickly overcame my gripe of the overly touristy and constant faint whiff of sewage vibes 😂 But there’s also a general consensus among locals that MAD locals are much nicer to tourists, which you do kind of sense when you’re in BCN. On the flip side, I’ve discovered that BCN is a surprisingly walkable city! (MAD def not)

Oops, just realised you were commenting on my work trips, not my birthday trip ! Ha…yeh, pretty blessed with a job I love that can fund so much travel. But i’ll save the details / stories from those for my first trip reports as a newb! Should be interesting as i’m consolidating all my work accomodation (~80 nights) into Marriott Bonvoy hotels this year and checking out some really nice properties I wouldn’t be able to afford at personal expense.
