Hi All,

Not sure if anyone has noticed but there is a new Emirates lounge in Melbourne opened at night on the 29th (According to one of the first class lounge Angels). It is up some escalators between gate 15&10. Not sure if anyone has had a chance to go look at it (I only asked as I was leaving to board my flight so couldn't go look).

Happy New Year all,
calmelb

No mention of it when we were there on the 27th. I thought the new space was for EY so I'm a bit surprised.

I hope it is true because it would be nice to see a new EK lounge - but I agree that it doesn't seem correct. And further, I don't think the EY lounge would have opened as yet.

Unless they have split up the joint MEL EK J/F lounge into 2 separate lounges since the 25 Dec...
From the 25 Dec, when I passed through the escalators to the MEL QF F lounge, at gate 11, there were no new works (paint) smell or anything like that.
No visual works either.

The old lounge is permanently relocated to that area above 15, or so I was told. The old EK lounge does seem to concur with that with a sign on the door saying that it is now permanently closed.

A bit off topic, but I find all EK lounges outside DXB, whether old or new, to "feel" the same. So I am not sure if I agree a new EK lounge would be nice, it'll probably feel exactly the same as the old one... just saying...

They all feel extremely dated to me. Nothing even remotely modern in the styling

As far as EK is concerned, as long as there is enough bling it should be fine... :-) (there is absolutely nothing classy about EK's obsession with everything gold-plated; it all seem dated even when brand new).

There's something to be said about EK's consistency in that regard, I guess.

This could be cultural

Sorry if this is not politically correct, but it reminds me of "mine is bigger than yours" mentally, for all the wrong reasons.

It is definitely cultural. But Etihad which is from the same country (in fact it *is* the national carrier) has a lot more class than EK; indeed compared to EK it oozes class. So does QR, which is from just a stone throw away from Dubai. Some might even think it smells like inferiority complex; you know, big cars and...

Don't get me wrong, I love my luxuries, but I prefer things that install a sense of luxe rather than having to shout it out or having to shove it down your throat.

More importantly it is gunna make it harder for EK WP and QF WP to lounge hop between that and QF First.

The new lounge is next to the EK lounge, with it's own set of escalators.

I simply can't believe we won't have heard about a new EK lounge being built and only know about it days after it opened.

Your comments are clearly contradictory. If it was a "cultural thing", Etihad at the very least would implement the same or similar "amount of bling" in their product. In any case they don't. QR is from a different country, yet Qatar and the UAE MAY have similar cultures. And they also don't have the same design philosophies as EK. And I think what you're forgetting is that EK, for all their bling and show, offer a very good hard and soft product.

No one is asking you to fly EK or have "the sense of luxe shoved down your throat"....if you hate it so much don't use the product.

Wow! I must have hit a nerve... I'll be in the naughty corner for all of one minute if it makes you happy. And for the record, I was referring to the culture in Dubai versus its neighbours rather than making a blanket statement about all of the Persian Gulf states.

This is way off topic and before admins (rightly) tell us off I am happy to say, over and out.

Is that the new EK lounge? Are you confirming there is in fact a new EK lounge?
No, I'm saying there is a new lounge space. That's no secret. The new escalators are in place too. But I have no idea who it taking the space, I thought it would be NZ or EY.
