I just got an email from EY announcing that you can now place bids to upgrade from Economy to Business or Business to First. Details are at ::ETIHAD AIRWAYS::

Seems that you can place a bid (with credit card details) 10 days prior and receive confirmation 2days prior.

I'll be curious to hear success stories as they emerge...

Considering their online portal is about as useful as a bucket with a hole in it, I have my doubts.

I placed a bid for all 4 segments and won on them all. The only grievance I have is that in posting the points to Virgin I have been credited with 0 tier points and 0 miles for all of the segments. I don't know if this is because they booked it into x class which I think may be a the code for redemptions (does anyone know if this is correct?). Either way I've no points and no one at Virgin or Etihad will take responsibility! Apart from that there were no other issues and the upgrade was approved before the 2 days mentioned in their email.

Hi rgalbr10.
I am flying MEL - DUB in economy in August and am going to bid for a upgrade also. I'm curious to the amounts people have bid that have been successful. Is there a minimum that can be bid for each segment?
That is a pity that you did not receive any points for this flight though, surely a person who pays extra for a business flight from economy should receive a extra bonus for the upgraded ticket, or in your case the base points themselves.

Thanks,
EuroFlyer

You will receive a bonus, just a mere 10% more miles only, and yes there's a minimum bid. :)

I believe there is a grid showing the probability of the upgrade being successful or not when you bid your amount.
Can the OP share with us what the winning bids were?

Does anyone know if this is only available if tix are booked using Etihad Guest FF numbers or is it available to all? I travel on Etihad a bit but credit to VA.

It's only available for flights booked with Etihad direct not Virgin codeshare. There is no problem with who you credit the points to.

There is a minimum bid, I went just over-mid way because that was what I was happy to pay. You are supposed to get a bonus of 10% bonus but I got zero points, still trying to get Virgin/Etihad to sort it out, think it may take a while! Its definitely worth doing if you can afford it.

Hi,
Just wondering if a upgrade is successful for example from economy to business what status credits do you earn for the segment, would the status credits be that of business or economy? I would be claiming the points and status credits from the flight against my velocity number to acheive gold status.
Thanks,
EuroFlyer

I don't think you get status credits for the upgrade, pretty sure it's in the T & C's

Thanks mella2007 for the reply,
I was confused when I checked the FAQ's and saw this written. I just thought id check here also.

"Will I earn Etihad Guest Miles for an online upgrade?
Yes you will earn Etihad Guest Miles for the upgrade. You will earn the base miles (as per the flown distance) plus a 10% additional bonus for the relevant cabin upgrade. The below illustration indicates the calculation of Etihad Guest Miles for an online upgrade.
Abu Dhabi to London
Base Miles = 3409
Upgrade Bonus
Total

Upgrade from Coral Economy Class to Pearl Business Class
3409
10% of Base Miles = 341
3750 Etihad Guest Miles

Upgrade from Pearl Business Class to Diamond First Class
3409
60% of Base Miles = 2045
5454 Etihad Guest Miles

Gold Elite, Gold and Silver members will continue to earn the Tier Bonus which is always calculated on the base miles earned and hence the upgrade does not affect the number of miles awarded. Tier Miles & Segments will be earned as per the upgraded cabin.

they really dont have their act together at all
my husband is an elite gold we are travelling in a few days he is on a J ticket and he hasnt even received the email to request the upgrade
I called the so called elite line and the girl had no idea what i was talking about.:o
when I asked for a supervisor she refused so I asked again and again and she said "listen to me"
' i said no you listen to me
get me a supervisor

she came back all coy and said that they only send emails if there is a possibility that a first seat will be available
she said there was no email in the booking
I said (DUH) his elite gold no is in there dont you have an email on that?

It is not guaranteed on every route, nor every class. It only happens for some flyers, and it makes no different if you have status to get the email. Personally I think you've been a little rude to them...I know foreign call centres are not perfect, however do you have actually a registered email address in his account? You really have made little sense with your phrasing.

no I certainly was not rude.
but I dont take cough
and I expect the the people answering the phones at etihad guest to know that they have a program for auction of upgrades
she kept telling me in not very good english that I could use points.
' I had to explain to her that I wanted to know about upgrading using the auction system
its been around for weeks now

and I dont expect and have never in my long life as a FF had a res agent to say
"listen to me!!!"
and of course he has his email in his account.-which she acknowledged and told me what the address was eventually when she bothered to check.

and if I ask to speak to a supervisor at any other FF program I have always been given the opportunity to do so.
and they usually end up giving me the answers the stupid res agents cant.
I wouldnt bother to waste my time asking for a supervisor if I didnt think the person on the other end was incompetent- which this girl was.

Personally I would have cut them a bit of slack. The system has only been in place for weeks. Sometimes people fall through the gaps when it comes to training on new things. For example, maybe this girl has been away on leave caring for a sick (terminally ill) relative for the last few weeks and hasn't been trained yet.

Doesn't excuse not transferring you to a supervisor. But it's a bit much to say they are incompetent when one doesn't know the full story.

I dont think"listen to me" has any excuse
and I really dont need excuses
just results

they should be there if they have personal problems.and I think your senario is a bit exagerated and far fetched.

she was just incompetent and rude and should not be in that position.
Im very surprised at the lack of service for that airline. its more like Qantas!!!!
actually almost exactly like Qantas!
I have never had such lack of service from Thai
UA
US air
AA
Virgin Australia
always anytime I have had a problem they transfer me quite readily to a supervisor who sorts out the problem.
anyway enough on the subject.
