Hi - as there was no sticky, thought I would start this thread(mods if I have missed something, please merge)

Due to recent enhancements, I will no longer shop at Woollies. Coles is much closer and bigger, so a potential win/win.

I know nothing about flybuys however, and was hoping a few people here could write a brief "dummies guide" and share all of the magnificent tricks and tips to maximise the program ( in the spirit of AFF's being a the sharing and caring community :p)

1) fuel purchase is from Shell fuel stations. No need for any fuel vouchers (unless you wanted or have a 4c off discount).

Just by swiping your flybuys card (or temp/emergency card) you will recieve FB points.

Last I knew: $1 = 1 fb point at servo. (Rarely go to shell).

2) Coles shopping for points was once $5 = 1 fb point, changed for the better... Currently $1 = 1 fb point. No need to spend over $30, a bag of lollies will provide you the points. Read the newspaper? 1 point just there.

$2 = 1 point - discounts are printed onto shopping receipts instead of being attached to the FB card.

As an aside, those with RACWA cards get the 4c discount at Shell by swiping their RAC card.

It was 2 points for every $5 spent. You are able to obtain points at a number of different shops (Kmart, target etc). Coles do print bonus offers on your receipt plus they do send out bonus offers semi regularly by post.

I put together a quick guide to using Flybuys points for Virgin Australia flights (by transferring to Etihad Guest) yesterday. It may be of interest to you: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....uest/how-redeem-etihad-guest-miles-71583.html

Otherwise, the basic value of a Flybuys points is pretty much as follows:
*1 Flybuys point = 0.5 cents when converted to Coles vouchers
*1 Flybuys point = roughly 0.4 cents when redeemed for merchandise on the Flybuys store
*1 Flybuys point = 0.4 Etihad Guest miles when transferred to EY

And don't forget that most/all(?) Shell service stations earn FlyBuy points also take Amex (or Visa/MasterCard) without the surcharging that we saw creeping into some Caltex sites so you can earn Membership Rewards or other card loyalty points without too many restrictions. If you are interested in Velocity Points then obviously that opens up BP fuel service stations (which also don't surcharge Amex that I know of) to earn VFF points - opens up the fuel market to two major chains (Shell and BP) so some logistical advantages there.

You'll receive a quarterly (or thereabouts) mail out of a book of coupons from FlyBuys, if you're subscribed to receive offers, I believe. My last book arrived last week and had offers ranging from "triple points on any shop" to "1000 bonus points when you spend $60", with vouchers staggered so you use one per week within a specific date range. Obviously trying to encourage large value regular shops.

The interesting thing however is there are usually also bonus points offers tied to regular items. One this week for me is 500 points for a telstra prepaid recharge of $50 or more; also 250 points for buying coles simmer sauce, 500 for buying a grill meat to the value of $X, etc.

These vouchers can be a goldmine.

Wth FB you can select an option to automatically use FB dollars at the checkout in must the same way is Wollies has announced. My tip is to NOT select this option and instead redeem gift cards when you reach the relevant threshold. this way you get a partial double dip on points.

You can get FB linked credit cards. In my case via NAB @ 1pt per dollar spent.

Also, if you scan the FB card when you otherwise wouldn't (single bottle of milk for example) it will often generate an offer on the docket... Double or triple points.

Absolutely correct!

Changing your petrol from Woolies to Coles now makes complete sense!

Not only does Coles express give you 4c a litre off your fuel ( plus another 4c if spend a certain threshold in store ) , flybys can be also collected!

Actually it isn't correct - it's 1pt for every $2 spent at the servo, not 1 for 1.

Flybuys points are worth about 0.5cents each. 2000 points gets you $10 flybuys dollars. There are double value rewards which will give you the equivalent of 2000 points for $20 but these rewards can only be used for specific purposes. Flybuys dollars can be used at most Coles group businesses.

The key with flybuys is the targeted offers. I get 90% of my flybuys points from targeted offers and redeem $10 flybuys dollars once or twice a month. Occasionally I get to take up the offer where 10,000 points ($50) comes as a reward after 4 weeks work.

The key is to start your transactions as low as possible. Give flybuys an idea of what product groups you buy but spend as little as possible with each group. This will lead to flybuys eventually sending you offers with targets you can reach easily such as $40 or $50.

Flybuys will probably start with offers of triple points or double points just to test you out. Once they know your average spend per week you will get offers like "spend $50 in one transaction for 500 points". Watch your receipts for docket deals. Flybuys allow you to take up multiple offers in one transaction. Just be careful to meet all the conditions of each offer.

Eventually if you are lucky you will receive a book of coupons in the mail. The next lot of coupons aren't due for another 3 months as a new coupon promotion has just started.

Bonus points from Coles are usually paid within 1-2 days from the transaction but some partners take over 4 weeks to pay their bonus points.

Your flybuys account will have a list of offers that you are eligible for and also other promotions that are running. Always remember to activate offers even if you don't think you will use them. This shows them you want more offers. Sometimes the offers will appear in your account before you get the relevant email.

Always keep your email offers and don't delete them until the bonus points have been paid.

The AFF Knowledge Centre has an ebook on strategies to use in supermarket loyalty programs. The programs change from time to time but the strategies you can use to get the maximum benefit will usually work regardless of what changes are made.

Good luck. Let me know if you have other specific questions and I'll attempt to answer them. We've had problems with our computer network all afternoon so this is the first chance I've had to respond to this thread.

My point is that you won't earn any points at WW petrol from January 1st 2016 (just the fuel discount) whereas at least you'll earn points at Coles Express alongside the fuel discount.

Excellent summary of Flyby's!

Your point that they are certainly very good at diving into an individual's Flyby's account , is a testament to how Coles has been successful in driving additional sales.

Another point to Add is that bonus points offers from Other Wesfarmers subsidiaries are found regularly too in the Flyby's program, particularly Coles Express, Target and Kmart tyre & Auto IME anyway.

As a disillusioned, previously very loyal, Woolies customer, I've enrolled in the Flybuys programme this morning.
As a total newbie to this system, how do points translate into flights? (I'm not at all interested in a bonus toaster!!)

You can use points to book a flight on Webjet, but the value is terrible...

Otherwise, converting the points to Etihad miles is the only way. You can then redeem the Etihad miles for flights on any of their partner airlines (including Virgin Australia).

Redemption value via webjet in not great as noted by Mattg.

My approach is to redeem point for Coles gift cards to lower my grocery bill and then use these saving to pay cash for flights.

Most of my travel is domestic Y so this approach might not work for you if you do a lot of international, or are addicted to J.

The most annoying part of Flybuys is having to carry around dockets etc to get rewards. I don't see any reason that they can't put everything on the card.

Especially those monthly coupons.

I think people feel they are getting a benefit from just receiving the coupons, but then a lot of people like me, rarely get to use them for various reasons. So, Coles wins. If they loaded them onto the card, everybody would have the benefit, well, the big shoppers more than the smaller shoppers who don't reach the minimum spends.

Which is where the "activate me" email comes in.
