From today, Flybuys points can be converted to Etihad guest miles. The conversion rate is 1 Flybuys point:0.4 Etihad Guest miles. Minimum transfer amount is 10,000 Flybuys points.

The conversion rate isn't great, but certainly better than nothing! This would surely have to be one of the better Flybuys redemption options now.

FlyBuys and EY

Just in the news today - can convert 10000 fly points to 4000 EY points

I just discovered this when I went to check my flybuys points balance a few minutes ago. I was going to start a thread but I noticed you already had. I hope many members are able to use this redemption option.

Re: FlyBuys and EY

More importantly you can earn tier miles...

"For the launch of this exciting partnership, all flybuys members will receive:

  • 3 Etihad Guest Tier miles for every $1 spent at Coles Supermarkets, Coles Online, Coles Express, Liquorland and First Choice. Tier miles count towards Etihad Guest status, so get to Silver, Gold or Platinum sooner andenjoy benefits such as lounge access, waitlist priority and excess baggage allowances.
  • Up to 25% off all Etihad Airways Economy and Business Class Fares(excludes. Breaking Deals fares). This offer is for sale until November 3rd for travel until December 4th 2015. Members must book via the flybuys website.
  • 5 flybuys point for every $1 spent on the purchase of an Etihad Airways flight ticket. Members must book via their My Offers page or the email sent to them.
These exclusive offers are for a limited time only!
From 1 January 2016 you will collect the standard offer of 1 Etihad Guest tier miles for every $1 spent and 1x flybuys points for every $1 spent on Etihad Airways flight tickets. More special offers will be available from time to time so keep looking out for the flybuys and Etihad emails!"

Might be something I consider in the future, but I have other uses for my points at the moment.

Another compelling reason why Coles take customer Loyalty and analytics seriously.
I wonder if this will trump the looming changes ahead at Woolies and their so called "Everyday Rewards" program.

I would have ~50k if I converted. From the east cost to Europe one way, you need about ~70k for Y, ~150k for J and ~200k for F.

So for one way, Y you need 175k Flybuys points ($875 Flybuys value), J you need 375k Flybuys points ($1875 Flybuys value) and F you need 500k Flybuys points ($2500 Flybuys value).

Interesting to say the least...

Etihad hand out status pretty easily anyway though (status match promos etc)

Conversion rate could have been better though. 10,000 Flybuys = $50 in coles credit or 4000 miles.. With Etihads pointspay scheme I believe 4000 miles would become ~ $28 USD?

The value of the Flybuys to Etihad miles conversion is to look at Etihad's redemption rates which are listed in the link below:
Spend Miles

As an example, a oneway J award redemption in J from Syd to Auh on EY is 97559 Etihad miles and AUD$223....so unless you shop a lot at Coles, at best the Flybuy points can be used to top up an account. What Credit Card(s) earn Etihad miles??

The link below shows you what I can buy with my 30000 Flybuys (12000 Etihad miles):

You can use EY miles for domestic VA (y only) redemptions at 6900 miles for short to medium length fl8ghts. Some may find it useful

For me there's not much between the rewards systems. It's not usually a major factor in my decision to shop at one business or the other. Price is more important for me. The points are just a bonus.

To many customers Price is important, although the biggest factor that one chooses to do their shopping is Location and ease of parking. ( All supermarket chains know this)
Loyalty programs that supermarkets operate are used to drive sales through bigger basket sizes and acquire/maintain a relationship between the customer and the brand itself.
Woolies will no doubt have a complete overhaul of their loyalty program shortly.
They have not leveraged enough from the program and data is not extracted smartly IMHO.

<snip>

American Express Membership Rewards convert to Etihad Guest miles at a 1:1 ratio (for a Platinum Edge holder, not sure about the David Jones cards).

there's supposed to be something about tier rewards as well i believe

Yes, so apparently you can earn 1 Etihad tier mile for every $1 spent at Coles, up to 2,500 per month. If you were to spend the maximum $2,500 per month (which I certainly won't be doing!) then you could in theory earn Silver Etihad status in 10 months.

I see this as being perhaps a useful way to top up tier miles earned from flying, rather than a way to earn status on its own.

Don't forget though the number of flybys points ( which get converted to Etihad miles) that Coles are throwing around at the moment is extremely generous.

the tier miles on offer may be quite compelling, not sure if anyone has done analysis on crediting VA domestic to EY for status rather than VFF? I imagine the status earn is skewed towards VFF but this might be a tip to those scales?

In regards to transferring flybuys to Etihad (10,000 minimum), is that only until December?

Ie: From Jan no actual flybuy points are earnt, you instead only earn Etihad miles (0.4 per $)?

Im just wondering/thinking of a way around 2,500 per month limit (as in bonus points of spend $50 recieve 1000).

no the linkage is for tier miles earn only (for EY status). the earn is always flybuys points which can be converted at request to etihad from the way i read it.
