Sign up to a couple of car rental companies promo emails, they send out discount prices each week. I prefer Alamo.

Can rental in the US is dirt cheap anyway.

Yeah, alamo will get me a ford fusion full size for around $1100 (with cdw) for 30 days with a bit of toying with coupons but i thought I could do better than that, especially when I just got a BMW x1 in france for $800 for the same period recently!

BMWs (1s and 2s) are the dirt cheap cars of Europe.

I'd always go for a Charger, better than an X1 by a long shot on the roads of California.

mumof2 I actually got a tip from a mate, try www.traveljigsaw.com which redirects you to a car hire booking service, associated with booking.com so is legit, and my mates used them, they search most of the big brands and came up with a far better deal than I could get directly and better than the other car hire sites. I think they sorta sub contract and provide their own CDW which might make it cheaper, anyhoo, give it a try.
