DL happily checked my baggage through onto a VA flight (separate ticket) in September.

SFO-LAX was DL
LAX-SYD was VA

They wouldn't issue the boarding pass though. I still had to check in with VA at LAX.

DL and VA are partners though. Can't comment on DL->AA
