Wish I could use the QF points to upgrade to business for the CX fare :(

It is a lottery even upgrading QF flights :(

Anyway I've spotted a cheaper option for you - it does mean wasting points.

There are some very cheap fares on JQ to SIN and HKG. Taking advantage of these:

$1400 for 2 adults, 1 child, 1 infant PER - HKG 18/6 HKG-PER 30/7

Then use points for all 4 of you HKG SFO on the 20th. Total points 150,000, taxes 3804 HKD = AUD600
Then use points for 3 of you (less 1 adult) on the 29th of July YVR->HKG. 100,000 points, CAD370
And buy one cash fare at CAD 852 YVR->HKGl
Total Cash

JQ PER HKG RTN AUD1400
CX reward taxes 1 AUD600
CX reward taxes 2 AUD380
CX cash fare AUD870

Cash total: $3300. Points burn 250,000

Personally I'd prefer the cash fare with CX.

Hi Greenfish, you get my PM message? I can't see it sent?!

I can appreciate the minor preference for JQ/3K exPER for QFF members, but AirAsiaX into KUL is cheaper and the cash fares either from or into KUL will be also less expensive. A stopover will find a cheaper hotel in KUL as well.

Consider YVR-HKG-KUL as the return. A quick pricing shows the CX cash fare about $500 (each adult) less than PER. 3K or D7 can provide connections into PER after a night in a real bed.

It should work on the outbound flights as well, although I didn't verify the award costs or availability exKUL, it would be the TransPacific flights that would be limiting factor.

One other thing to consider is that MH flights in fare classes that do not accrue FF miles (at least within SEAsia) can be very inexpensive. I'd allow ample time for connections if connecting from a paid ticket to an award ticket.

Happy wandering
