What's worth visiting in Western Australia?

Fly to Learmouth, for the spectacular Ningaloo Reef!

Base yourself at Exmouth for a few days & switch off from the rest of society. ( well that's what I did when I visited many years ago).

The Ningaloo reef, IMHO is a real gem on the west Coast!

Spectacular coastal scenery with amazing opportunities to visit pristine, unspoilt reef systems, without the mass Tourism that the East Coast often experiences particularly on some parts of the Great Barrier Reef.

What makes this area so special IMHO is the lack of night clubs & neon lighting..... It's pretty basic & remote , but for a couple of days is so worth discovering.

Broome is legendary & is well worth seeing if the opportunity arises.

I would pass on Karratha & Port Hedland as destinations as the cities are shipping ports & service hubs for mining/oil/gas companies.... Very little in the way of scenic value I'm afraid to say in the cities themselves.

+1 to Ningaloo Reef. I flew into Exmouth back in '07 IIRC and spent a few days at the Novotel whilst it was opening up. Some of the best marine life / snorkeling I've seen anywhere in the world. Instantly fell in love with the place and can't wait to revisit.

The Kalgoorlie cup is on the last week of September, highly recommended.
I'd be happy to show you around the traps or give you some direction if you head my way.

I would have been about a week late for that anyway, I think.

But that's a great offer! It's a shame that I won't be able to take you up on that on this trip.

Agree with the others re giving K-town and PH a wide berth. Though if you decided to drive off into the Karajini National Park and camp for a couple of days it could be enjoyable.

Go with Broome, safer bet regarding chilling out given you can't get to Exmouth.

Only just spotted this thread. Are you going to stop in PER at all mattg?

The YHA hostel in Broome is good for low-cost accommodation.

Thanks. I was going to either book at the YHA or Cable Beach backpackers. Though I notice that the YHA is closer to both the airport and the town.

I was originally planning to spend a few days in Perth, until I realised that I could travel beyond Perth for virtually free thanks to AA miles! So I figured that I might as well head somewhere else as I can easily go back to Perth quite cheaply any time. Unfortunately this does mean my time in Perth on this trip will now be restricted to a 3.5 hour layover at around lunch time on the way to BME.

I realised just after I posted that it is September and I'll be on my DONE5 then :).
