Hi all,

Family member total novice using points on either Qantas or Virgin.
Have more than enough points on both programs.

Looked at both websites.

How\can you get a FF ticket to Vietnam on either program?
They discovered Singapore goes to Vietnam, is it wise to transfer Virgin points to Singapore program and book flight or use Virgin points on Singapore metal?
Edit: I found on Singapore metal via Virgin FF 366800 points in Business round trip.

Via Singapore website 360K KFF plus taxes\fees?
Edit: 93500 Saver Business per person and $630 taxes\fees per person I think.

What about Qantas?
Edit:
I had a look and Classic Reward 120K in points business class to Singapore Ek metal, jetstar economy to Ho chi Ming and $664 cash for two people one way.
Looks like getting home in November is not possible in Business Class on points!

Links or tips please.

Is it better to buy ticket in economy, no status and attempt upgrade or just get business class ticket on points?

Regards

If you want to travel in business class on Qantas, and aren't P1 or P status, I'd make sure you have the ticket before you fly. Otherwise if applying for an upgrade, you should expect to travel in the class paid (ie economy).

The only direct flights from Australia to Vietnam are on Vietnam Airlines. They are in Skyteam, so Qantas and Virgin points aren't really going to help. But there are a few options for connecting flights.

Using Velocity points to fly on SQ (either by booking directly or transferring) would certainly be a possibility.

With QF, I would suggest a number of strategies. If you can't get flights via SIN on QF/JQ, try calling QF and asking if there is availability on MH. This won't show up online but they will be able to see if there are any seats over the phone. CX/QF via HKG is also a possibility.

I would also consider flying to an intermediate point in Asia (e.g. SIN, BKK or KUL) then picking up a cheap LCC ticket the rest of the way for the short flight to Vietnam.

I would go CX via HKG pretty sure you will find good J availablilty.

If you have oodles of points then CX via HKG might be a good use.
If you live in Melbourne or Sydney then I would look at a J fare to Vietnam; and only use the domestic points if you didn't live in either Melbourne or Sydney.
