Howdy.

Just looking at booking a family trip to SIN in late 2016.

My question - basic and probably stupid as it may be - is if I am booking through VA would the travel miles be credited to my VFF account? Or would they be credited to my Krisflyer account given it's an SQ operated service?

I'm assuming VFF but I figure I should clarify.

Cheers.

They could be credited to either VFF or KF, depending which FF number you enter into the booking.

The actual number of points you get will vary depending on whether the flight has a VA or SQ flight number

That seems logical and probably something I should have realised already.
Having looked at a couple dummy dates they are VA numbers.
Cheers Andye.

I recently booked via the VA website flights on SQ metal.

At time of booking I entered our VA details for extra bonus points and sector recognition, I then phoned the VA desk to get my SQ reservation number and using the SQ app, I can go into the booking to select seats (J seats, don't know if it works for Y) and I can go into Passenger Information and see our VA info so everything will be credited to our VA account. Also, when I go into Velocity, My Bookings, select the reservation and select Change Passenger Details, I also see our VA information.

So booked SYD-SIN on the VA website (signed into my VFF), got a VA flight number (but SQ metal).

Making sure that I will get this credited to my VFF - is that the correct understanding? Thanks!

You can credit your FF points to -either- VFF or KF, the choice is yours. Which FF number you enter at the time of booking will determine which account gets your points. It hasn't got anything to do with getting a VA flight number or whether or not the product is actually SQ metal or not.

There are some gotchas though, not least of which is: You won't get VA flight sectors credited to your VFF account even if you use a VFF membership number on your SQ/MI booking (you will however get VFF and SC's at a rate described by KF/SQ ... look to their web pages for details).

Thanks for that Moopere

Just a question about that:
- I booked SYD-SIN on the VA portal, used my Velocity# on the booking
- Flights have VA numbers (VA5510 / VA5515), but will be operated by SQ

So by that, I think I would get SCs for VA, is that correct?

Also, I would get VA flight sectors since VA is the "Marketing Carrier" by virtue of my ticket being assigned a VA flight number, yes?

Yes.

But you would also get VA SC and FF if you booked the same flight on the SQ website, received an SQ flight number but used your -vff- number. Always check the fine print in case SQ codeshares off to a non earning partner of -theirs- though of course.

Yes, correct. I've done this a few times as well, even though SQ pricing is very often slightly better ... because I needed the sectors. Also be aware that booking direct with SQ won't gain you any status based bonus FF points unless you hold appropriate status with KF and use your KF number.

I very often call up my trusty spreadsheet to calculate a lot of this for me as its very convoluted.

Thanks mate. I'm kinda the opposite - the VA pricing was better than the SQ pricing, and i needed the sectors/SCs with VA. hence the booking on the VA portal !

As a few have said, it comes down to (in summary):

Booking via VA will give the advantage of earning Sectors toward status qualification/retention with Velocity and will result in any status benefits in terms of point earn being enjoyed if you supply your VFF membership number

Booking via either VA or SQ will result in base points earn and Status Credit earn for your VFF account if you supply your VFF membership number.

Booking direct via SQ does have the advantage of being able to use KrisFlyer points to upgrade. It is possible to do the following to assist in gaining/maintaining VFF status though:

* Book an upgradable fare via SQ, supplying your VFF membership details for crediting of points and status credits
* Upgrade using KrisFlyer points (including transfers from American Express Membership Rewards, Velocity and other programs)

No seat selection at booking though, or has that changed for a VA FF member booking with the code share airline direct, rathan than via VA.
Ie have to phone up the code share airline, and request a specific seat after booking with VA.
