VA Plat flying SQ; can I use KF to upgrade but credit to VA?

Per the title, I only just had a thought, which sounds... plausible, but not sure if it could work.

I have a flight booked with SQ in business (booking class D for every flight). I need at least the SYD-SIN and return sectors to credit to VA to retain platinum for another year, and so have my VA member number in my booking.

I just went into manage my booking to look at something and noticed there's an "upgrade with miles" button.

For 2 of my flights I'm flying on the 388 (at least one of them looks to be the refurbed one). While SQ Business is outstanding and I'm more than happy with it -- am I somehow able to use / request to upgrade my flights to F/Suites with KF miles, but still credit the earn to VA?

I'm wary about putting my KF # anywhere near this booking as I need the flights to earn in VA.

I'm not gonna sweat it, but any chance to try SQ F I feel is worth a shot, right?

Technically you should still get the J status credits, as you paid for them.

But it may be difficult to get them if they don't credit automatically, which tends to happen when the velocity systems receives a booking that is anything other than bog standard.

Recently I was upgraded to Business on SQ due to PE not being available on the Plane but velocity only credits 'Y' status credits despite having to Pay for PE.

It took several email and all the original booking evidence I had kept to get it fixed.

If you have booked with SQ and are eligible to upgrade with points then yes you can still credit to VA without any issues.

When you login to upgrade it will ask for your krisflyer details but as far as I'm aware this is just for login in purposes only and doesn't change the FF account on the ticket. If it does then it's easy enough to change back to VA

Thanks for that. It's tempting. I had a look, First Saver awards are on "waitlist"- expertflyer is showing R4 F4 A4 Z4 C4 J4 U4 D4; no idea if all 4s is normal for SQ.
No idea if the waitlist is likely to result in a successful upgrade.

I'll have to mull it over. I'd be converting points into Krisflyer to do it (they're not there already), don't really want them sitting in Krisflyer when I could use them for Y-> J elsewhere!

I don't know what the normal is either for SQ

I don't think it will let you waitlist either if you don't have enough points in Krisflyer, but yes it's very tempting

I might have answered my own question; was going to give it a go for one leg only (thought why not) but get the following:

I'm wondering if I edited my booking to remove my VA number, then tried again, that it might work, but also very wary of crossing into "sorry this isn't going to credit to velocity" and while Suites would be amazing, SQ Business should be good enough for me

Change to Kris Flyer to perform the upgrade, as that is required.

Then at checkin present your velocity card and ask them to put it in the system overriding the kris flyer.

Should work fine.

Once you change it to Krisflyer for the upgrade you should be able to change it back to VA, otherwise yes at checkin they will change it for you

Does anyone have any experience with having done this for an upgraded SQ ticket? (i.e. the same process I'm following?)

I could afford to lose one sector of the earn to VA, but none of the others. I am cutting requalification a bit fine this year...
