I have a 5y.o. Kelpie cross. Considering subjecting the poor sod to six hours in a crate. Any accounts of recent experiences with pet travel, especially ADL PER would be welcome, good or bad. Cheers.

We've checked both cats and dogs as freight to travel with us and on their own. Can be a bit complicated to set up as you may need to book the crate separately. Jetpets is one of the companies I recall.
On the day though it all works really well. You need to drop them off at the freight terminal a bit early. They look after them from there. They are kept as cool as possible and are last on an first off. None of our animals appear to have been particularly stressed and arrived in good condition even on Dash 8 legs.
Not cheap but I think there is an option to treat them as hand luggage trunk routes I believe.

My daughter and her partner recently relocated from Canberra to Perth. They used Jetpets to get their three fur kids (miniature Dachshunds) onto the same direct QF flight as us (we were going to visit anyway), to save us the hassle of having to drop them off at the required time, etc. All seemed to go smoothly.

Have taken our staffy on around 8 flights. ( BNE CNS return).Used Dogtainers each time. Turn up at the fright terminal around 90min to 2 hrs prior and they have the crate waiting. She now knows the smell of jet fuel and knows what is instore for her. She doesn't particularly like it, but when she is picked on the other end all is forgiven.

Any ideas on costs, looking to get a puppy from a NSW breeder and shipping to Perth

At least she doesn't have to get her temperature taken at the terminal. I'm sure that always gives them a fright.

Clazman it is more expensive than a cheap human ticket but cheaper than the most flexible fare. You pay for the container separately if you don't have your own iata approved one

Moving a puppy today with Jetpets from Newcastle to Perth including 2-3 hr stop in Sydney $320, normally be $290 got charged a extra $30 for the stop over and access to the lounge ..... includes pet crate hire

Jetpets say 3pts for ever $ spent that only applies when the animal fly's Virgin, so i asked do i get QF points for Qantas and the answer is no

QF will only accept Pets if the animal has a clearance certificate from a vet which is about $50

*flame retardant suit on*

In consideration of other pax, please ensure your pets are clean and don't smell. I have had some terrible flights with offensive smelling pets. Also, ask someone who doesn't have pets to smell it, most pet owners are immune to the smell of their pets, no matter how bad.

LOL, they fly in the cargo hold with QF

We fly our 2 small dogs between SYD and BNE at least once a month, and have done for a year or more since the policy changed and you can no longer check them in at the terminal in SYD/MEL/BNE. If you are on the same flight QF freight give you a discounted rate and they need to be consigned 90 mins before the flight. We pay $110 each way for up to 30kg including the box. We bought our own box from QF to ensure it complies with their requirements.

And yes, they don't fly coach, they fly cargo ;)

I dispute that. Perhaps at your local airport but not at any majors. We have never been asked to produce such a thing after at least 20+ flights.

Having never done this before, the breeder and both Jetpets said it was the case and required by QF

You might be correct CFWM

QF website says

PYour Pet’s Health

Your pet should be fit, healthy and able to cope with being confined for an extended period. An airport is an unfamiliar and noisy environment that can cause

some animals to become stressed and agitated. It is strongly advised that you consult your vet before considering transporting your pet by air. They will be able to

check your pet's health and assess your pet for air travel. In some instances you will be required to provide a certificate from your vet confirming that you pet is fit to travel

by air. Without these required certificates the pet will only be accepted at the owners’ own risk and at Qantas Freight's discretion.

Really?? In the states they have them in cabin. I just assumed it was the same here. https://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInformation/specialAssistance/pets.jsp

Same with hotels. A guy at the Westin Whistler demanded and received a Suite because his room wasn't big enough with their 2 big dogs in there.

We dont have the same "service animal" loophole. Some say there is less anxiety over here. And over here animals are not allowed into many places including hotels.

I worry more about the unwashed flea infested human self loading freight commonly known as a bogan.

Just to clarify this, puppies under 12 weeks of age require the veterinary certificate, as do older pets (over 10years I believe).
Older puppies and adult dogs do not require the certificate.
I would ask the breeder to get the vet to write the certificate when they vaccinate the puppy.
