Hi guys - new to the site and having trouble finding any info on this specifically. Have about 150k velocity points - and wanted to book flight from Sydney to Cairo via Abu Dhabi on Etihad. I wanted to go regular economy on the way there, but hoping to just upgrade with points the Abu Dhabi - Sydney leg to a business class ticket.

Now I've had little luck on the Virgin website in doing this. Will I need to use a travel agent?

Thanks!

When are you travelling?

You'll need to find when VA start operating VA30 again - EY are doing it for the next 5 ish months while VA refit their 777s and you can't upgrade on EY metal.

Don't like your chances... Depends on what floats your boat. You can get reward flights for about 55000 points plus $85 each way. (I checked 7th June - 21st June) If you are keen on business class then it will cost you about $3.3K one way. All of these can be booked online. Alternatively contact Virgin customer service and see if they can do it on one PNR. They might charge you a booking fee.

simple answer is NO!

VA will not be operating to AUH till later in the year, and you can only use your Velocity points to upgrade on a VA operated flight

If you wanted to use points ... look at reward seats in econ and business
