My partner and I have pooled for several years. We were able to get her to Platinum and last year had enough to gift me first Gold then also Platinum (we had quite a few business class work trips on my part plus a USA trip for the family).

This year its unlikely we can do the same so I called to talk through some scenarios:

1. We stay pooled but do not have enough credits overall for me to retain Platinum - I was told I will revert to Gold.

2. Given scenario 1, how much would we need for my partner to retain Platinum and to gift me Platinum again - was told this is 1800 i.e. 800 for her retention plus 500 to gift me Gold (even though I am would already be at Gold) plus another 500 to gift me Platinum.

So it would seem on the face of it I would be better to "un-pool" as we would only need 800 each to retain Platinum. Does this sound correct?

Agreed

Also good to point out. If you go for the individual retention option then obviously you both are subject to the eligible sector requirement of 8 each for platinum.

depending on your renewal times you could alternate pooling to each other to maximize your SC count. IE. if your renews in August, and hers in February, both pool to you until August (or when you hit 800) then revert to pooling to her.
