Air Berlin Gold doing Adelaide-Melbourne-Adelaide, I know the Qantas Lounge in Adelaide is a lot better than the Virgin one, what about in Melbourne? Specifically food and printing.

100 % agree with this

I think I prefer the VA lounge in MEL to the qantas club. But I would personally stick to the lounge of the operating carrier. In the case of Air Berlin Gold, who partner with both VA and QF, presumably that status will only allow someone into the lounge of the operating carrier anyway.

Fair enough, prior to the Premium security exit I'd probably have plumped for the Qantas Club.
I interpreted the post as the OP choosing a carrier based on the best lounge. Maybe I'm incorrect.

Both lounges are good (if you are in the QF Business lounge) and have pretty much all the same stuff. The feel of the lounges is the main difference... VA is more bright and modern whereas QF is more mute and traditional. Also VA lounges don't serve spirits.. so no G&Ts with VA :( But I think the bar might open earlier in VA (11am) :)
As PF mentioned.. VA has priority security screening direct for lounge members.. this is the best :)

Generally Qantas Clubs are better than Virgin Australia lounges
Half my post was truncated. :(

Anyway, to continue ...

... however, at MEL, the decor in VA's in T3 is nicer than QF's in T1. Food is about the same.

It's a bit like the choice I regularly have at LAX between the AA T4 flagship Lounge and the QF First lounge at TBIT. I use the former to wait for a flight and the latter to dine. For me, the Flagship is far more comfortable and classy than the First cafeteria.

I find the Qantas lounges more comfortable and there is greater chance of finding something nice to eat.

The Virgin lounges have a funny feel. Is it the white decor? Don't really like it. But in saying that I think the VA lounge in MEL is probably one of their better lounges.

If choosing carrier based on the lounge for ADL-MEL-ADL, surely the Adelaide VA lounge makes that choice for you. I love the VA lounge staff in ADL, but the lounge itself is a bit of a tribulation.

Surely the ADL lounge need not dictate the choice for the MEL-ADL sector? It is 2016 after all with one way pricing , not back in the 1990's where returns were inevitably cheaper than one way flights.

Virgin lounges (IMHO) always feel very temporary and cheap. QF lounges seem to be larger and have less of a 'cram Em in' feel, but I think food wise they're pretty much on par, but let's face it, you don't fly for the food these days. QF also seems to have better biz facilities

Never been into a VA lounge in my life so I hadn't been following it. Sounds like it was a trial so you never know what might happen I guess.

Get in there.. live a little ;) :)
Or are you scared you'll like it....... ;)

Choosing carrier based on lounges as prices are similar.

Yep I like that part of priority security screening!
