Hi all, I’m flying into HND (QF) and have a 7hr layover before flying out of NRT (with BA). I’ll check in for both flights at SYD but I’m curious to know, will I be able to go straight to NRT and drop off my bags or will I have to busy myself until 3hrs before my second flight, and then drop off my bags?
I’ve been to Tokyo before so wasn’t overly excited about a brief trip into the city and would rather hang out in a Flounge somewhere at NRT.

Thanks in advance!

Can you try this? Might give you an idea of when their Narita counter opens.

Or you could call at: +81 (0)3-3298-5238

  • To find out check-in times at the airport, go to Manage My Booking. Click on your flight number, select ‘Check in’ and then click on ‘Other ways to check in’.

Thanks for the reply. I can check-in from 24hrs before the flight but no mention of dropping the bags off.

In my experience the operating aircraft counters have to be open, there's no shared facility. So you might be right about waiting until 3 hours before the flight. I'd use a left luggage service and go for a walk.

It will take you 65-85 minutes to transfer between the 2 airports

Scheduled Bus Services | Airport Limousine Bus.

After arriving at Narita, find the JAL customer service desk. I have previously being successful in getting there help to get airside and straight to the lounge, but I did not have checked luggage.

Make sure you take a bottle of water off the QF flight, because nothing is normally open in Handea arrivals at that time of morning.

You would need BA's counter at NRT to be open in order to check the bag. If you were flying with JL, it wouldn't be a problem since they have check in counters in operation the entire time the airport is open and no airline will transfer bags between airports (even to itself on the same ticket).

The quickest way between HND and NRT non stop is the bus. There is a non stop train option, but it goes through several other lines, including one of the Tokyo subway lines. It's limited express at best and takes almost 2 hours.

I assume you're on BA6.
Any reason you couldn't get BA8, the 0850 from HND? That's a 3 hour 20 connection from QF25 without an airport change.

That's my fear. I'm flying out on a BA flight, but a JAL flight number, but I'm assuming I'll need to use the BA check-in.

I'll get my BP in SYD so that shouldn't be a problem, it's just the check-in luggage that is going to throw me out.

When I booked there wasn't the option, and anyway, I think BA8 is a 777 but BA6 will (unless it's subbed out) be a 789 by mid July. The price I pay for being an avgeek... :)
I was planning on doing the bus but if I need to kill some time I might as well catch the train?

Is there any arrivals lounge at HND? I'm OWE.

The only time I've had a connection across airports, it was a 4 hour transfer (SYD-NRT/HND-ITM), I took the bus.

The direct train from HND-NRT departs HND on the Keikyu line to Shinagawa, then travels through the Asakusa subway line to the Keisei Oshiage and Main lines to NRT. Not every train does this. Other trains give a similar option with a change at Aoto Station (a transfer station between the Keisei Oshiage and Main lines). These are normal commuter trains and are not designed for large amounts of luggage. They can get very busy in the morning.

JAL has an arrivals lounge at HND, however it has been closed for quite some time (years) and does not look like it will reopen any time soon.
The airport has arrivals shower rooms. Massage and Personal Care | Haneda Airport International Terminal (You can use it for free if you have a JL J+ boarding pass)
In general, arrivals lounges where they exist (CX in HKG, and AA and BA in LHR) are not part of oneworld benefits. It is unlikely you can use status to access an arrivals lounge without having flown in on the carrier that operates the lounge.

Yep I'll be arriving on a QF J ticket so I guess I'll be out of luck there.
I'll be arriving on a Sunday morning so I'm guessing it'll be fairly quiet? I'll just be travelling with a single moderately sized bag and I've found it OK on public transport previously.

Looked promising but I don't believe it opens until 10am, which is after the bag-drop will have opened.

Ah well, looks like I'll just be walking as slowly as possible, probably catching a bus (easier than a train(s) by the sound of it) and then finding a quiet corner near the BA bag drop and waiting for them to open.
