Not sure where to put this so mods please move accordingly.
I was on a 3 1/2hr DL flight from MSP-LAX yesterday in F and as the departure time was after 9pm it was a snack service, literally. There was also an underripe banana not pictured. I had just arrived on a shorter connecting flight with a similar snack service and was left feeling distinctly underwhelmed as well as hungry. My seat buddy complained to the FA and was offered the opportunity to purchase food from Y.
I don't think this is really acceptable but would love to hear what you think.

Ironically the food in Y is probably better - a range of fresh sandwiches etc which don't normally form part of the [non-perishable] snack basket offerings: details can be found here: http://news.delta.com/sites/default/files/FlightFuel_National_MECH_final.pdf

The food in Y is the same type of thing after 8pm. That's the menu my seat buddy was given and the FA pointed to the snack boxes available for purchase.

I'm more shocked by the fact an F passenger would have to pay for Y food!

Domestic F in the USA is terrible. It's probably one of the reasons there are so many private jets in the USA.

The lounges are equally bad. Flying SFO/SYD, you need to pay for your food in the Admiral's Club!

That being said i rank it (AA F) above QF or VA domestic. Better legroom, better seats, better service than Australian domestic equivalents. On 'meal' flights, the food isn't too bad.

And unlike in Oz, I have seen F/J flights quite a lot cheaper when you fly outside of meal times (eg overnight). Not always, but can make it a bit more acceptable.

That said, the offering shown by PF and the advice to pay for a Y meal is really unacceptable for a 3.5 hour flight.

Getting back to PF's issue - the 'snack basket' is the offering. If you want to purchase additional food from a separate catering source (buy on board) I would expect to have to pay. Same applies if taking an AA flight for example - if you want more food over and above what's offered you are able to purchase from the coach menu - but it's never been advertised as a free feature.
