I have a flight booked to Amsterdam in December and the flight has a 17hr stop over in Hong Kong. We land at 07:25 and our next flight leaves at 00:25 so we have 17hrs minus time in customs ect.
Having never been to Hong Kong I am definitely looking at using the long stopover to my advantage and going out to see a little bit of Hong Kong. We would like to be back at the airport by around 9pm so that we have time for a shower and dinner in the cathay lounge.

Im just wondering if anyone here has any advice on whats worth seeing during a day trip and any possible complications we should watch out for.

Thanks

Whilst it is dearer than the public bus, catching the train will be the most efficient way of getting into the city. At Central you can walk to the ferry terminal for a Star Ferry tour of the harbour. Then depending on the cloud cover a trip on the tram to the top of The Peak.

Plenty of shopping and eating opportunities too, but others will be more knowledgeable than me in that regard.

with a long layover like that i'd be after a good long walk, perhaps take the cable car up to the big buddha -hopefully get some fresh air then head into tsim sha tsui for lunch and shopping then take star ferry over and then up the peak tram for sunset.

Hong Kong does Christmas really well, so plenty to see and do.
Definitely do the "Peak" and star ferry. Plenty of parks and gardens and the food is amazing (everywhere) .

Agree. Christmas in Singapore and Hong Kong are wonderful. As opposed to Australia where we are too PC or lazy to do anything.

Plenty of suggestions in this thread: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....tion-guide/hong-kong-ideas-8am-4pm-70934.html

Edit: If this is your first trip to HK I would consider taking a taxi from the airport to the city. The airport express train is great, but you won't see much, while a cab ride will give nice views of the port and the city. You can take the train on the way back.

After that thread, I did the Museum of Coastal Defences (this wasn't my first time in HKG, though); the weather turned bad, so the Ngong Ping 360 was a miss. Also missed it the next time, due to smog.

For the OP, I would suggest:

* Airport Express train into Central;

* Walk around Central, then Peak Tram (funicular) to The Peak if weather OK; back down the tram, then

* Taxi to Aberdeen; walk around Aberdeen, then taxi back, going the long way east and NE ...

* ... to the waterfront near Star ferry; ride the new-ish big wheel to get fantastic views;

* Star Ferry upper deck to Kowloon; take views of island from the viewpoits on the foreshore there;

* Shopping or window shopping at Harbour City mall (you'll appreciate the air-con by this time)

* Some sort of walking tour, if time permits or just walk around upper Kowloon, away from the big hotels (but do Nathan Park on the way)

* Kowloon Station back to airport.
