Some people may not notice this but NZ in the last email sent has notified members that NZ is changing "refreshing" the earn rates for APD and SP.
Refreshing Airpoints Dollars™ and Status Points earn rates on Air New Zealand flights
Airpoints Dollars™ and Status Points earn rates on Air New Zealand flights are being refreshed. This is to reflect airfare price changes across our network since the last rate change in 2014. These new earn rates will take effect for all new bookings from 1 July 2017 including all flights flown by Air New Zealand and on qualifying partner airline flights.

You can view the updated rates by using our online Airpoints™ calculator.

So like most airlines FFP NZ is reducing the number or points from flying.

Airpoints has been on a downward spiral since the turn off the decade.

Last month I had 2¢ expire ... they had been sitting in my account since my last Airpoint $ redemption in 2012.

In that time I was able to successfully burn the seven RU's they gave me through 2 years of *E (1 banked) and soft landing through *G & *S. These flights were credited to Velocity.

All up I was *E from 2009 thru 2014.

It used to be a good program but the introduction of S2S was the writing on the wall.

I'm actually shocked that Air New Zealand thinks it can get away with devaluing its frequent flyer program even further. It's already virtually worthless! :!:

Well that's probably why, do any serious AFFers have Air NZ as their preferred FF program (that's a serious question!).

The only way Airpoints can make any sense is if you are resident of New Zealand, travel often AND travel mainly on High cost fares.

In New Zealand they have such a lock on loyalty plans etc they obviously do believe they can get away with this. I dropped my GE years ago after they introduced S2S and told NZ that the value in having GE for me was negligible, NZ long haul is way over priced and I would happily go via other routes, Gold was sufficient and then they further reduced status benefits. I have even dropped my Koru Club membership lounges are too crowded and food was not worth it.

You'll find the folks at airnz genuinely do believe in their product and loyalty offering.
I mean, if they modeled SEP and burn ratio by mile versus other FFPs in the region, it's clear as day airnz is close to the bottom of the list - HOWEVER - given most members would be from NZ and airnz is a logical choice on many routes; why bother to improve? Profits are high, customer satisfaction is high, bank AP sales are high. Times are good inside the bubble.

Me :)

I have QF & VA status also but I look after my NZ programme first. I prefer Air NZ as a carrier. EK is nice too but they only depart once in the arvo from NZ and soon to stop the Syd route.

Prefer the benefits of NZ status over VA and cost of NZ flights generally cheaper via the NZ website so although have status with VA I don't earn many points as I save the cash and purchase from NZ. My VA upgrades go to waste but I knew they would when I signed for the programme.

It's just a matter of the best fit programme for the individual. I am NZ based. More Y flying than premium. I don't have any concerns around the changes. Domestically I love that we can get some ridiculously cheap flights and prefer to save the cash. Flew AKL-ROT to visit family for $19 each way Fri-Sun. Beats 7hrs driving. For that price I don't care about the APD/SP earn.

Yep that's the only way I maintain Gold (and soon Elite) is high cost fares through work travel - although I have to be loyal to NZ as realistically they are the only domestic airline worth being loyal too . I'm able to maintain QF Gold through personal travel internationally but there's no way I could do that on NZ
