Combining multiple travel credits?

A while ago I remember seeing a post here that someone was able to combine multiple travel credits into one and use it for a single booking. How was this done? I just called Amex Travel and they said they have to be used in separate transactions.

I believe there was some talk that combining travel credits may be possible 'sometime in the future' but I believe it is not possible at this stage.
