QF is moving to T8 at JFK on 03/04/2018

From reliable handle EK413 on skyscrapercity:

"Sources have indicated QF JFK services will be relocating from Terminal 7 to Terminal 8 towards the end of September. I ain't sure if Terminal 8 is A380 equiped, however certainly makes a lot of sense considering Terminal 8 is owned by American Airlines (AA).”

Of course the LAX-JFK leg is a 747, continuing from BNE-LAX (and I suspect a chance of becoming a 787 from aircraft 5-8)

But the new AA lounge looks pretty nice, at least until BA finally updates it's T7 lounge, and certainly makes connections from the US East Coast and Caribbean a lot easier

And CX did exactly this - moving from T7 to T8 in January this year. Certainly better for connections to/from AA. But of course T7 is BA's base, so that also makes sense for QF/oneworld.

Don't get excited. IMHO the AA lounge is pretty average. I was in there a week after opening and it was very crowded, already looking shabby around the edges, staffed by very grumpy people (may be teething problems?) with average food. We are spoilt in Aus with lounges. (BTW I'm WP and flew transcon F, so got in the nicer bit as well)

Things may have settled down now. A couple weeks ago the flagship lounge was pretty good. A dozen bottles of bollinger in the ice bucket (replenished as soon as each bottle was finished) and a pretty good selection of food. A bloody mary and tequila bar where you could mix your own drinks how you like them.

Bar QF's Fcls, the new flagship is superior to all QF lounges either in Australia or overseas. Access to the flagship lounge is also pretty generous including business class.

The move from T7 to T8 at JFK is a possibility, but I think making the switch in 2017 is unlikely (and certainly not in September).

JFK T8 is only about 60% of the old T8/T9 footprint. There is space to expand the terminal and they didn't build it to the full planned size after 9/11. T7 is next door, but the JFK Expressway is in between the two terminals.

Currently, Air Berlin is in T8. They are planned to move out of T8 into T7 in mid September (not that it seems the airline will stay in operation much past November). AB has 3 flights at JFK and use 1-2 gates at T8 for much of the time between 1 and 9pm. If AB moves out in September, there would be space available for a single daily QF flight.

QF has published to the GDS that they will be moving to JFK T8 from 03/04 onwards. That means a huge upgrade in facilities to the AA flagship lounge instead of the BA lounges.

I'm not sure what they'll do with Qantas Club members though? They normally only get access to the Admirals Club when flying on AA.

I'll be sad if this happens. As much of a third world dump as terminal 7 is I actually find it's compact size to be a real plus on the whole with security and when bad weather causes huge log jams with gates at the bigger terminals.

I think it's a great move.

I always went to T8 before migrating to T7 merely for the flight.

QP members should have access to the ACs at T8.

Currently (well last time i was on QF12 from JFK) they used BA's checkin area. Would QF not just use AA's? Or does it mean that QF will have their own checkin counters likely manned by AA staff? And one just then enters the Flagship checkin area to go airside.

They rearranged the check in area at JFK T8 just before US moved over. The area it used to be is now a normal bank of check in counters. I haven't been able to locate the Flagship check in since. They also expanded the Priority check in area at the same time.
CX has their own counters.

No, QF has its own counters in an area where non-AA airlines operate from.
