It would certainly limit my options. For example many of the smaller hotels have no English speaking staff and local tours are cheaper but the guides also dont speak much English.
It wouldn't be extremely difficult though as almost all the train services have English notices and announcements. Most eateries have photo type menus and good hotels are still relatively inexpensive. With a combination of independent travel and some private tours you could still be reasonably confident of getting around a lot.
The two big advantages I have with Mrs Woodyren being a former local is the unexpected places we are taken too by friends and the ability to get out of tricky situations by either her understanding and sorting the issue or calling on her network to get assistance.
