so earliest sale fares are January 17. Suggest there are many unsold seats up to 10 days before that. Maybe if they sell some of flights departing January 17 onwards, they'll then drip feed some seats a week to 10 days earlier. Scary future for all airlines.
 
What annoys me, is I would actually be happy to pay for 3 economy tickets @ $879 each = $2,600~ and be a be a fairly lie flat (better than Y+) .. if only Qantas allowed that.
They do allow that - it is called comfort seating or EXST. You need to call.

Also, you do not need to pay any taxes or levies for the additional seats.
