A Qantas flight travelling across the Pacific Ocean has made a mayday call with reports of an engine failure.

It's believed more than 100 people are on flight QF144 from Auckland to Sydney.

The flight is due to land at 3.10pm at Sydney Airport.

Developing story: Qantas flight from Auckland to Sydney issues mayday alert

A Qantas flight from Auckland due to land at Sydney Airport this afternoon has issued a mayday call.

Emergency services are on stand-by as a precaution with the plane reporting engine trouble.

Flight QF144 left Auckland just after 2pm local time.

The plane is currently flying over the water and is on time to land about 3:30pm EDT, according to a live flight tracker.
