I will be going up to Byron Bay for two to three nights in August and will appreciate some advice:

1. Is it better to fly to Ballina or Gold Coast?

2. Recommendation as to accommodation - there will be three of us and I do like my hotel/apartment to be at least 3 1/2 to 4 star.

Thanks in anticipation.

Ballina is a lot closer, but would the Gold Coast offer more flexibility, I'm not sure?

Ballina is closer & appears to be well served by shuttles running services to Byron- not sure of the quality of service as I have not used them.

I flew from SYD to BNK with Virgin Blue for a weekend in March 09. There are about half a dozen shuttle services from Ballina to Byron for about $20 each way. No need to book, they are waiting there when the flight lands.

Point to note, my partner flew this route last year and the return flight was cancelled. As there is only one flight in and out a day, DJ had to bus passengers to OOL to fly home.
