Hi,

My friend is wondering about the following:

They have a close contact (non-relative) who has an abundance of QFF pts and would like to transfer some portion of them to their FF account. From what I read, QFF points can only be transferred to eligible family members. Are Qantas extremely strict with having to prove status of relationship ? If tickets have already been purchased (specifically for international flight) will Qantas staff still ask for any supporting documents to substantiate the relationship? Is there substantial risk associated with such a transfer?

This close contact also has pts on their KrisMiles Flyer Account and can list my friend as a redemption nominee without having to prove anything.

Can my friend proceed with transfer of QFF pts or best to stick to KrisMiles pts expenditure?

I'd just like to make sure I can provide my friend with a sound recommendation.

Perhaps they are mistaken and are in fact cousins? That's allowed.

Qantas do not require proof of relationship.

Thanks Justin- could this close contact just list them as a cousin ?

My friend is just worried that even if the ticket is purchased successfully, on the day of departure, they could be asked to prove the relationship (not sure how they can do that) but still good to know.

Will your friend be asked to prove the relationship on the day of departure? I'm pretty confident that isn't something that happens.

Will Qantas audit the account at some point in the future and ask for your friend to prove the relationship / submit a stat dec? I believe this has happened very rarely in the past. In my opinion if your friend is not e.g. selling points/flights on Ozbargain or otherwise online and/or in large quantities, then there is little risk. Of course, the ToS is still being broken and therefore there is always a risk of getting caught.

As long as both parties know the rules and choose to go against them, that is their choice however both parties need to accept that they both maybe audited at some stage and risk having their QF accounts frozen/cancelled and all points forfeited. If this occurs before the award flight then that flight may also be in jeopardy.

Your friend can use his/her QF ff points for an award flight for you. As a gift and not a commercial transaction :- selling QF ff points.

Yes, can redeem points for an award flight for anyone unrelated but it has to be booked from within the FF account of the owner of the points. Transferring points is restrictive in the sense that it has to be loosely associated with a relative.

No, if you make an award booking (or even an upgrade), you still have to select the relationship to the person you are making the booking for.

It's no different to transferring.

In terms of ToS its no different, but anecdotally from what people have mentioned its less likely to get audited than a big points transfer.

I think that's true if you are travelling together.

However whether booking flights separately or transferring, I think it's only if you are doing it frequently (to suggest money is being exchanged) that it gets flagged. If you're booking (or getting booked by) a known dodgy trader, it would still get flagged.

Most if not all of the examples I've seen online are when people did actually buy or sell the points.

Note that if QFF finds out, both accounts can be put under investigation, and both accounts could be/get closed.
Personally, I wouldn't do it as I value my QFF membership.
Points in QFF do not expire so long as there is activity, while a lot of others have an expiry date no ifs no buts.
Hard decision, but QFF points cant be sold, which in a way is what is being done here, bought and sold with exchange if points.
