When I fly from SIN there are always baggage weighing scales near the entrance. I suppose it is easier to weigh your baggage before checking in, finding out you have excess, and hold up the queue. Is there such machines in MEL? Or if there isn't is there anywhere else I can do it? Thanks in advance guys!

Wouldn't it be easier if you just put your luggage on a closed (un-manned) check-in counter?

Buy your own set of $9 scales. Then you can muck about while waiting.
Link Below.

Extreme cheapskates, can wear a jumper and a coat in. A modified coat with extra pockets in the lining can take a few more items.

I have not seen free public scales at Australian Airports, and like parking, suspect its a revenue enhancement tool. Or Australian yobbos would jump on it and break it = unnecessary cost.

The solution is to buy some miniature electronic travel scales from ebay that can do either 20, 30, or 40 kgs. Very small, under $10 all in.

I use older $10 Aldi fishing scales - bigger heavier and the xray guys give it extra special attention. It can be slipped into your pocket.

Balking at paying Tiger's excess luggage at $15 a KILO (hand or checked in), I had to give out/share 2 bottles of wine recently - a loose- loose deal for all and the airport concessions, while some international travelers were delighted by the quality of fine Australian Shiraz.

Can't comment for MEL, but for anyone in Brisbane looking for scales, there is one on the Right Hand Side as you walk into the Qantas check-in area.
