I'm kinda highjacking this thread.....however here goes....if me and the other half fly from Perth to Japan using Singapore airlines and booked through SQ, but with our VA card numbers to be used would be still:

A. Benefit from family pooling with VA? (Or does it have to be a specific VA flight number for the route).

B. Assuming VA number on SQ metal means (still) no seat choice at time of booking unlike booking through the SQ site.(Yes I know the earnings appear to be less through SQ).

a) Miles will flow into VA and the points and SC will follow family pooling rules. Well that's the way it worked for us and recent UA flights.

b) No idea on that one.

General question would be "where are you planning to utilise your miles?" If you are going to redeem in the next three years on SQ I would retain miles in KF. Even buying through VA wouldn't be that cost advantageous based on my research on USA trips. Btw the KF>VA>KF transfer penalty of 1.55 really stinks it is such a devaluation.

Think very carefully where you buy and credit. I can feel a spreadsheet coming on.

Edit PS: I just searched my proposed similar itin on SQ and VA. Same flights on SQ metal.
Y SQ $1,200 VA $1,500
J SQ $4,300 VA $6,050

You might want to check how much you pay for loyalty to VA.
