Can I accumulate Velocity points flying with Thai airways? If so, do I need to join the Royal Orchid program and then transfer/convert the points to Velocity? Is any/the conversion rate worth doing so? (I am also a member of Kris flyer but have little points with them) Thanking you in advance for thoughts.

Not directly.
See here for airline partners where you can earn velocity points. Scroll down for the list...

Virgin australia is not a member of Star alliance

You will need KrisFlyer (Singapore airlines) and earn KrisFlyer points. You can do this flying TG (Thai) . You can transfer from velocity to KrisFlyer and vica versa however the conversion is not 1:1

Transferring velocity into KrisFlyer:
1:55 velocity transfers to 1 KrisFlyer

Transferring KrisFlyer to velocity
1:55 KrisFlyer transfers to 1 Velocity

No

IMO Transferring KrisFlyer to velocity is less attractive than velocity to KrisFlyer because of the better redemption potential on Singapore airlines especially international travel

Except that Singapore Airlines/Virgin Australia had introduced carrier charges for redemptions since the restart of the Krisflyer transfers. Previously Singapore Airlines had no carrier charges under VA 1.0.
